One of my original flexplate bolt heads is stripped beyond use.
I have these from GoWesty:
They are the only thing I could find. The threaded portion is 1mm longer than the original and the bolt head itself is quite a bit taller though when I checked it on my engine it looked like it would give ample clearance with the torque converter.
Has anyone used these on an early automatic and driveplate?
Thank you. |

according to the parts book it should be M8x11
in terms of head size, not sure i would run a torx/allen because i fucking hate them
vw p/n is 003 323 699A _________________

Just go to your local hardware store and get some Grade 10.9 Flange Head Bolts of the correct size and length. The originals are only Grade 8.8 IIRC.
If you have a nearby wrecking yard, you could probably find something there as well. |

Yeah, I hate them too. The depth of the holes in the crankshaft are like 19.5mm with another 8mm with the flexplate so there is plenty of clearance.
Yeah, I saw that on the fiche...usually that sets it straight.
GoWesty says 81 ft-lbs of torque. I’m putting 65 on it like Bentley says. 81 is a shit ton. |

People seem to be talking about two different fasteners.
Flex Plate to Crankshaft - m12 socket cap, original is XZN, replacement is hex socket
Flex Plate to Torque Converter - m8 hex cap with shoulder
The replacement m12 screws wth the taller head will be fine, clearance-wise.
Torque spec for the crank to flex plate (65 ft-lb) IS different than for a flywheel (81 ft-lb). _________________ SL |

You are correct. Fit is fine. 65 ft/lbs is the right torque. 81 for flywheels, they are a way bigger and heavier chunk of metal. |

don't have my book handy, but 65 ft lbs on a M8 bolt seems very excessive. are you sure that is the correct torque? _________________

65 ft-lbs is for the m12 screws that fasten the flex plate to the crankshaft.
OP question was about these screws, not the m8 for the flex plate to torque converter. _________________ SL |
