Hey guys, new to the late bay section, I hang out in the late model type 1 forum but my Dad picked up a 72 bus and we are installing an electric fuel pump. He purchased a relay (5 prong) and we can’t find a wiring diagram.

I dont have it on with me currently but I want to say it has the following pins

30 (or maybe 31) 85,86,87 and 87a?

I have come across a thread where someone had installed a relay but they didn’t show where the wires went. Can anyone help me out? Trying to bring this bus back to life.

Here’s a few pics for fun
Thanks!
Nick

I tried that but couldn’t find any specific to VW. A lot are for later cars. I read on a thread here that someone had done it and they called out ground, fused power, and I think one to each side of the coil but he just listed them off as 1,2,3,4,5 and not what pins they go to so it wasn’t very helpful but I’ll keep googling.

From the terminal numbers you gave, it sounds like a standard relay, often called an "ice cube relay", because it's square and about the size of an ice cube.

Lots of diagrams in the gallery here. Like this one.

Good luck.

Thanks! That’s very helpful. Do you need to hook up the 87a in the center to anything or can that be left alone (maybe for other applications?)

87a is powered when the relay is static and cuts off when you apply power to 86, leave it alone for your application.

Use a rabbit pump relay and wire it like this, pay no attention to the fuse block connections. It will cut power to the pump if the engine stops running.
