A Belgian chap over on the Speed Talk forum posted this a few months ago:

"The gov here implemented tech inspection every 2 years for oldtimers between 30 and 50, every 5 years when older than 50. The sad thing is that all mods are banned. They may only be original.
Right now about 50 % of all oldtimers here are banned from the road as a consequence. Mine included (for the only reason that I have an ITB fuel injection on the engine - rest is original...)

It sure is a victory for the purists.

I really start to hate the EU which is at the basis of this regulation. It has become sort of a communistic regime..."

Aghast, I asked:

"Does this leftist nonsense apply to motorbikes, as well? And what's going to happen to all those gorgeous performance modded 2CVs in France, and all those gorgeous performance modded VW Beetles, Porsches 911s, and NSU Prinz TTs in Germany, and all those gorgeous performance modded Fiat 500s and 126s in Italy and Poland?

Monsieur Belgian's reply was:

"In 2022 bikes equally will have to pass tech inspection.

And yes the VW Beetles, Porsches etc fall under the same nonsense."

This discourse took place in the Vintag Engine Tech subforum of Speed Talk, so clearly everyone in that thread is very much biased toward pro-vintage motoring legislation. I understand plenty of you reading may not care about vintage metal at all--fine, to each his own, we can still be entirely civil to one another. But you know this is the Samba, right?

What I really want to know is: can anyone here confirm this has indeed become law in the European Union?

Weirdly, in the Netherlands, a new rule just got passed that cars older than 50 years are exempt of any annual or bi-ennial inspection at all starting 2021. Not sure how or why, but for some reason some Dutch petrolheads have been able to give EU nannies the bird.

Newsflash: Europeans care whether vehicles are actually roadworthy. Shocked Shocked Shocked

The OP added FI to his classic car. Now he's worried a rule change will force his car back off the road.

Updating a classic to FI doesn't make the the car "unroadworthy".

It's just crap over reach.

Sorry OP, I have no idea about EU rules except they are even more ridiculous than CA rules.

That overreach has already been proposed here by the EPA. The "feds" want to add in a national law for EPA regs that all vehicles have to maintain their factory pollution controls (or something to that effect). That means no more fart can mufflers (which I'm behind), no more engine swaps, no more aftermarket performance items or pollution control delete items (thanks to the diesel "rolling coal" movement a while ago). The agenda is being pushed hard.

Let them first enforce the laws that already exist. In New York State it is illegal to have ANY tint on ANY of the door windows of a car. For a "SUV" you can have tint on the back door windows but NOT on the front door windows.

This is part of the state mandated yearly inspection.

As a cyclist i can tell you a huge percentage of vehicles on the road you can't see the driver so you don't know if they see you.

don't know - we left! if true then there might be bargains to be had...until the same legislation comes your way.

The Fed's want all cars on the road to have a remote control shutoff and a crash black box. They want all vehicles more then 10 years old off the roads.

The Feds just want your Tax money, and the tax money your children, and grand Children will produce.
To that End, they are trying to keep you from shooting up the place, or poisoning the groundwater & air that your Children & Grandchildren will drink & breathe.
It is some of the states you got to worry about,
some States want to be sure you use the correct bathroom for the sex your Mommy raised you!
GM Credit already know where your car/truck is, and if you stop paying they'll take it back.
Or if you're speeding, and wreck it, they'll void your warrantee, and call the Police.

When most of your economy is based on capitalism and consumption there is no benefit to keeping older vehicles on the road.

I do indeed find it to be something of a conundrum for political conservatives such as myself, admittedly. I recognize the need for continued economy, thus planned obsolescence makes sense from a manufacturer's standpoint; however, when the Church of Mother Gaia is collaborating with corporations to legislate out of existence niche market items such as vintage autos and motos and their associated niche suppliers I start to cry foul. Mad

Not only that, but in Germany, if you are involved in a car accident and the car was modified or illegally passed, you are liable for every damage as a result.

Thank you for the confirmation.

So I suppose aside from the UK and the few non-EU nations that have not adopted similar legislation the auto and moto scene in Europe has just been killed. No more classic racing, all that history, all that culture, all those annual events, all those businesses, just gone in a flash. Sad

We need that here, that would get a lot of unsafe crap off the roads.

Putting on a set of headers or dual carbs doesnt make a car unsafe. We have more driver problems than unsafe car troubles

So I'm running modern FI, O2 sensors, 4 wheel disk brakes, radial tires with modern rubber compounds, sway bars front and rear, 2 piston brake calipers with a dual circuit master cylinder..

Yep, that would make it completely unsafe.

It's crap.

For those that are buying this a good thing, please surrender your vintage car. If you don't, I hope your running a single master cylinder, no seatbelts, and polly tires.

Most of the people that still drive them are looking to improve performance, AND SAFETY..

These cars are a hobby. They log so few miles on our roads that it's just ridiculous to attack them as environmental disasters either. How many miles did you put on your VW last year? I bet most of us log less than 5k. People that drive more than that don't drive out-of-tune crap boxes.

I don't really buy into the forced obsolescence excuse to get our vintage cars of the road either. How many people have not purchased a new car but have elected to keep their 1968 bug as a daily driver instead? Come on. Give me a break. I would hazard a guess that 98% of vintage car owners have a modern car, and use their VW on weekends or cruise nights.

Furthermore, the aftermarket employs tons of people. Millions of dollars are spent. And yes, the aftermarket collects taxes for the government on all that money spent.

The legislation is written by people that couldn't tell a carburetor from a valve cover.
