My tent is in pretty good condition but when the sun shines through it I can see that some of the threads are beginning to separate in some places.
I think if I patch some of them now it will slow down any future spreading/tearing.
Can anyone recommend a good vinyl self adhesive tent patch?

I might not have the answer but I am curious about this. OEM tent or aftermarket tent? Knowing the type of material used on your tent could help with suggestions.

For a more durable fix (and less cheap-hippie appearance), I've had good results from iron-on canvas patch material. Available in different sizes and colors to better match the original canvas:
