Hi,
My neighbors are contemplating a drive from Wisconsin to California in a 86 Westy with Toyo Eclipse tires that have a 92S sidewall rating. 92 = 1392 lbs. S speed rating is fine - obviously .
I've run toyo eclipses on my golf and jetta, but I have always looked for a 99xl or stronger for my 91 vanagon.
I don't want to freak my neighbors out unnecessarily, but if this is a legit safety concern I would like to raise it with them.
Thanks!

That is also a passenger tire rating and needs to be reduced by 9% I believe so it would be 1267 lbs.
Total capacity of 5068 pounds. Many westies weigh that so the tires are imo marginal. YMMV. _________________ Dave O

I mean, I'm guessing they'd make it, but I'd swap those tires. Can't imagine the winds in big flat stretches of that drive would be fun and if anything were to happen requiring an emergency maneuver, that'd be sketchy. Safe to say the van would be loaded with road trip gear too?
You could also clear your conscience by saying something. _________________ '87 GL w/ Reimo top |

Thanks for the replies. That is pretty much what I was thinking. With 2 little kids in the back seat (and the need to install shoulder straps is another issue), they want to be safe. They are new to the world of vanagons though and I don't think they realize that these beasts require a pretty beefy sidwall.
I know that has been a major consideration whenever I've bought tires - and one where you get a range of opinions from "doesn't matter, dude" to "Nicht weniger als eine 102!" depending who you ask. |

The van has the stock steel piano casters on there. I actually really dig that van, it is super original, even the digital clock in the dash works! But for driving across the country with kids... yeah. Different set of considerations. |
