$6000 for this one 4 years ago as you see it here. Advertised as road ready and it was... almost...
Lots of changes and improvements since.

I sold two Buses and bought my '63 Standard Microbus for $10,000 in 2011.
My dad couldn't believe I was willing to drop that much on one Bus but I haven't regretted it for a second. It doesn't hurt that it could sell for 3x that now.
I do remember going to look at it, about 120 miles from where I lived and after looking it over and driving it I told him I wanted it. He offered to hold it for a week or so (this was mid Nov, IIRC he offered to hold it until Thanksgiving) but I told him I was planning on driving it home that night.
Now, I was 26 at the time, wearing dirty old jeans, my old shop jacket, etc. My dad, long goatee, tattoos on his arms and my friend who while a smart guy, is from a small town and has a super country accent so I'm guessing the seller didn't think I had the money.
He asked "Ok, well how are you planning on paying?"
I said "Cash?" and pulled 10k in $100s out of my front pocket.
His eyes bugged out and he sort of mumbled and shuffled off to get a bill of sale. I leaned over to my dad and said "You know, I probably won't get another moment like this for a long time so I'm going to try to remember every second of this."
The Bus the night I bought it.
It was to a T exactly what I was looking for, a small hatch, original paint, walk-through Standard Microbus and considering I live in Alabama, I was all the more thrilled that I found one within driving distance.
Here she is on the last long trip we went on a few months pre-pandemic to New Orleans.

When I bought our '66 Beetle in 2004, the nice lady who had owned it for 38 years was amazed that I gladly paid $3,000 for an old Volkswagen.

...and on the other end of the spectrum, I paid $50 for a rusting, engineless '65 Bus in a nearby farmer's field. Wish I still had it... |

$1600 on October 12th 2019. It’s a project but the body is solid. I’m just having trouble with the ignition on it. The problem is mine is a 1973 but the body and whole electrical system and interior was switched to a 1971 and back style sometime in the 1990s according to the records and original owner. So it’s basically a Frankenbug because everyone sees the 1973 plates on it and questions it. The original body rusted out so they went to the junkyard and got a body the exact same color. Had I known it had been swapped like that originally I would of never bought it. I bought it thinking it was all stock. But oh well it’s a beetle so once I get it figured out then I will be good. |

Oval window cars are getting a little pricey. Couple of years ago I bought a 54 bug that had been same owner since 1967, pretty solid old car and I paid around 6 grand. Came with a 1600 dual port but I’ve got a nice 36hp ready to go in. About 10 years ago I bought a 55 and it came with dual port and later tranny with close ratio gears. The 55 came at about 7k from a friend in Arkansas. A
also got a nice split case tranny and a 36 hp engine as part of the deal paid around 7 grand for that. The ovals are going to hold value. Bugs from the 70s are still in the crapper, buy one for cheap thrills😀
Here’s the 54 check out those big lights, I got the originals, previous owner installed the biggies for better visibility
This tan 55 just needs engine installed and probably a brake job from sitting too long😀 |

$1600 for my 71 camper in 1996. According to a random online inflation calculator, that works out to $2700 in today’s dollars.
$4200 for my current 66 camper project in 2017

1960 Panel / purchased 1968 for $500
1966 Sundial Camper / Purchased 1995 for $1600
1969 Porsche 912 / Purchased 2007 for $10,000
Sold the panel in 1971 for the first of a long line of Chevrolet 3/4 ton work trucks.
The camper and the 912 are to the maintenance stage, almost. You know how that goes. Both ready to go cross country with a valve adjustment and an oil change.

Dec. 30, 1967, I paid almost $2300 out the door for a new beetle with radio, Seimpret low profile tires, gravel guards etc. And I still have it.
PS Spent way more to bring it back after years of neglect |

In 1997 I paid $2300 for an engine with all new parts -- disassembled, which I had to assemble myself. I installed it in my 35 year old Type 3. I paid $650 for the car when it was 9 years old. |

500 bucks for a 66 in 2017.
After all, it is an economy car.
