Getting ready to install new windshield in my '89. Any experience out there with the flexible glazing compounds available? Are these a good idea to prevent future leaks? Any ideas on the best way to apply them? Or do they make installation more difficult with no advantages? Thoughts? |

I'm in no way a window expert, but I've probably installed 25-30 in VW's over the years, and never used anything under the rubber. The only time I ever had an issue was once when I cheaped out and bought a brazillian seal, which didn't fit properly on the bottom corners. Lesson learned. Now I only buy top quality seals, and they've all fit perfectly.
My worry about using any sort of sealant / compound would be if water did find its way in behind, it might now be able to drain out properly, and could magnify the problem you're trying to prevent.
Although, I'm sure lots of people here have installed them all sorts of ways with good results. |

Thanks, if that's your experience, I think I'll go without. I think the job will be easier and less messy without. I have a good quality seal. |

Interesting that the bible clearly indicates locations for sealant to be applied.
My recently removed windows all had a sealant under them from the factory.
Do most people leave this out? |

Yes, I'm a fan of waxes too.
Do you apply to the seal groove before installation, or squirt in under the lip after? |

I apply after installation. I use a plastic spatula to lift up the seal and a red tube on the panel wax can to spritz it under the seal along the entire body perimeter. I have also solved leaking window gaskets in original, still installed, window gaskets with this technique. _________________ Dave O
