|
|
I have replaced my oil cooler (old one was leaking) on my 51 VW and since the engine is back in the car, there is a irregular squeeking noise from the fan housing. I detached the belt to the generator and the sound is gone. So it's definitely the generator or the cooling fan.
The noise seems to disappear when I rev up the engine a little bit. When I turn the generator by hand, then it turns without any noise. I removed the thermostate valve at the back of the fan housing and I can feel I can rotate the fan about 10-15 degrees on the axis.
I guess this play isn't normal and may cause the excessive noise. When I rev up the engine the rotation speed wil "lock" the fan in the end position, so I don't hear it. When the engine is running with very low RPM, then it's less constant and this may cause this sound.
Can anyone confirm that there shouldn't be any play on the fan and if I came to the proper conclusion? _________________ VW Split Beetle (1950) |

Hello,
It would appear that the rear bearing in the dynamo is failing, if you have so much shaft play at the fan.
A pair of 6202 bearings are required, I think.🤔

Does a failing bearing result in radial play on the fan? I think I need to remove the housing again and remove the generator and fan to determine what's wrong. But I understand that there shouldn't be any radial play on the fan regarding to its axis? _________________ VW Split Beetle (1950) |

There should not be any play either up and down or front to back. |

Either the nut is coming loose or you lost a woodruff key, neither is good and must be dealt with now, hopefully things haven't chewed themselves up in there too badly yet. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

The engine has only run for a short duration, so I think everything will be fine. When I check the construction, it could be that the fan hole is worn out or the nut is not correct anymore.
Do I need to remove the fan housing or could I just remove the generator and pull the entire fan out? It might be difficult to reach the 4 screws that is used to mount the fan fover (29 in the picture). _________________ VW Split Beetle (1950) |
