This is my virgin post so firstly I'd like to say hello to you all.
Hello.
I have a single cab manufactured in Italy in 1964.
The outer lock on the passenger side door handle is temperamental to say the least - usually it'll lock when it's not really essential but very rarely when I actually need it to.
I know that many beetles will lock from the inside using the interior door handle but this does not appear to be the case on my vehicle.
My question is, should this method work on my truck (but is not working due to a faulty mechanism etc) or was this not a feature on these models and they will only lock using the key in the outer door handle?
I would appreciate any wisdom that you are able to send my way.
Thanks. |

Welcome!
With a push button outside cab door handle bus, you should be able to lock the passenger door by pushing the inside front door handle forward.
If you do this with the door open, then close the door, it will then be unlocked.
( it will work opposite if the front part of the mechanism was spun around the wrong way)
It may help to lubricate the door mechanisms. The key will lock and unlock it easier if it has been lubricated in the last 5-10 years. _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |

Hi Clara, thanks for your response.
I have investigated this further and the driver side does indeed lock from the inside as you suggested.
The passenger side will lock using the key from the outside but not with the handle from the inside.
So I guess there's a fault with the mechanism somewhere? |

Could be a fault, but I'd think it more likely to just need lubrication, or with an old worn mechanism, an adjustment could help.
Is the door panel in place? undoing teh two screws near the inner handle and rotating it can help, but I'd take it out and clean and lubricate it so the claw jumps out vigorously when the lever is pushed from the outside.
I've seen pieces broken on early mechanisms (which can be welded back generally), but the later ones usually aren't broken, just haven't been cleaned where the sun don't shine since the bus was new, and are all crusty up in there. should be greasy, not crusty. _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |

Thanks Clara, I'll get in there and see what's going on. |

Ok, so it turns out that the mechanism had worn down.
The key was able to force it into the locked position but the handle didn't have quite enough movement to do the same.
A little blob of weld was all that was required to compensate for the wear and it now works as it should. |

Would be better to pull the latches and soak them in a thick oil over night. We tend to utilize used gear oil, but some folks do find the smell from that to be too much for them, at least till the odor fades away.
Lubrication makes for a lot easier to work parts and longer lasting. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |
