Awesome thanks!
I feel like someone ransacked this thing before I got it. Bolts for the aux air valve, nut to hold the throttle switch connector to the coolant line, ICU hangs freely, and the nut that holds the air plenum to the case are all missing. |
Make sure the old bolts didn’t get snapped in the engine and that’s why you’re seeing the floating/unbolted Aux Air valve on your engine.
Doesn’t take much to have those small 6mm bolts snap on you or a previous owner. _________________ '68 Westy- my first VW and vehicle/Bus- long gone.- sold it to a traveling Swiss couple....

I took my Aux Air valve out today to give it a hot and cold test. The hole shrinks in the heat and gets larger in the cold, so that's great. However, the valve itself isn't connected to the case. It was just hovering without any bolts.
Any idea what size bolts those are? |
M6x1.00.
15mm length, as measured from UNDER the bolt head to end of threaded portion. |

It has an electrical heating element, but also activated by engine heat. That’s why it should be attached to transfer heat. _________________ ☮️ |

Okay, the nut locks in spring tension of the bi-metal spring inside the valve. You have some adjustment to either increase tension, which keeps the idle higher for a longer period of time with a cold valve/engine and outside temps, or loosen tension so the valve closes sooner, if needed with the heating of the spring inside.
Electric element has power and ground in those wires going to the valve, so no engine ground to worry about, just firmly bolted to the engine.
Make sure any hose connections to the aux air valve are tight and leak free. Hoses sometimes crack in places not easily seen unless fully removed _________________ '68 Westy- my first VW and vehicle/Bus- long gone.- sold it to a traveling Swiss couple....

I popped this part out and it seems to be working find with the freezer and oven test.
I read on here that it needs to be grounded to the engine block? is that true? there is a little nut on the back of it and I am wondering if that is where I connect the ground to?
just hunting down an idle issue and cleaned my throttle body and replaced the gasket and this was just another thing to check.
