I was killing time hunting the wires for the 8 track in my 74 because I'm thinking about replacing it, it needs a new belt at least so I can break out the 8 tracks I have for it, and sure enough I found another mystery wire. I managed to follow it and surprise to me something I never paid much attention to is another mystery device.
Its nearly inaccessible because of the radio and painted over. Its not a push button, not a toggle, and not a rheostat style I've used before. It can be set in any position inside the round opening kind of like a joystick. Its mounted behind the brake warning light.
It seems like a strange place to put an aftermarket item. Did VW dealers install anything there? The wire that's loose is solid brown, I haven't traced the other one yet. Its a pain to get at.
This makes 4 mostly disconnected mystery switches
- The front doors have what I'd call dome light switches, circuit was not connected to anything under my ownership. Clearly there is no dome light.
- There was a toggle under the left side of the dash that was part of the circuit with the door switches. I think it was to account for open switches when the doors were off but IDK for sure.
- I still have a speaker selector switch mounted rather than have a hole in the dash, my best guess is there was a CB in it at one point.
- Now this one that also does nothing

It is a light that is supposed to illuminate the e brake handle-your bulb is painted over. |

Facepalm! I've read other posts about that little light, that makes it L21 on diagram and maybe just disconnected from the speedo. I need to drop the radio anyway, I can get in there and have some fun with it, I can get the glove box light wired up at the same time.

Oh man the descriptions of how terrible that heater lever light is still didn't prepare me for just how funny seeing it work would be. I pulled mine out fixed the wiring and tested it out of the socket, worked fine and seemed brightish and cleaned the paint off the lens. Reassembled and so little light makes it through that pin hole it's comical. The reflections from the speedo and the street light 100 feet away totally washed it out. Amazing that satisfied any requirement |
