|

Hey everyone I’m new to the site. I just purchased a 69’ type three fastback. It came with an older OEM dash pad that I thought I would try and install. Not as easy as I thought.
I have the grab handle secured, but pushing the dash pad against the instrument cluster area, the pad bows up in the middle by the speaker. I am noticing there are screw holes by the defrost vents. Is there an extra piece of trim that goes along the defrost vent area to hold the dash pad down as well?
Thanks for the help I’ve used This site a lot so far!

Insert pad into car at an angle with empty dash. Insert screws but do not tighten. Insert gauges. Install passenger handle. Lightly tighten dashpad screws. Btw, you must use the plastic washers on the dashpad screws or it will crack at the openings. Check fit and make sure the gauges have good ground with the metal tabs that hold them in place. Hope this helps.

Here are some pics
The first picture is of the dash pad, I just ended up installing it.
In the second picture you can see me holding it down and the difference it makes when I push it down.
I’m new to all this so maybe this Dash has sat out in the sun and warped. Or missing something else and there is a trim piece that goes along the back of the dash and screws in place to the screw holes. Still not sure

That dash pad is out of a 71-73 type 3, and will be too short at the windshield for your 69. Keep in mind there are new versions (repops) of that same dash pad available. They also are short at the windshield too. This is because for 71 VW added a curved section of metal along the front of the metal part of the dash for the lip (of the padded part) to go into and hold it in place. What you're doing by holding it down, is part of why VW added the lip to hold the pad in place at the front.
That said, the best you can do is get it to fit the best you can, and put the gauges in place along with the screws (under the trim piece that faces you), and hope for the best. This is also why Herman reproduced some early (70 and earlier) style dash pads for those of us that wanted a better fitting, more correct looking dash pad for our earlier cars. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Thanks everyone! I’m starting to realize that there were little things like this that were changed along the way but the overall car stayed the same so it’s good to have this information.
If I were to get a dash pad from Herman later, are they still available?
Also does anyone know what rearview mirror will fit a 69? |
