I have a 69 Type 3 Squareback and replacing the Brake Master Cylinder. The old one is a THREE circuit two prong and all replacements are two circuit. What are the three circuits for and can I replace it with a two circuit?

German ATE master cylinder fit fine on my '69 square. Not the cheapest, but the best!

Yes. In fact VW replaced it with the 71 and later style dual circuit version themselves. They obsoleted the 3 chamber set up at the same time (why you can't find one). You'll need to switch the brake light switches to the 3 wire units, and alter the wiring as shown in the brown Bentley to keep the dash warning light function. If you're not worried about it, you can use your 2 wire switches. Keep in mind you might have to replace your left front hard line depending on the port configuration of your new master cylinder, with a longer line. Most of us have already done this.
I hope this helps.
