My wife and I are taking our 4 year old son to the redwoods (Avenue of the Giants area) this weekend and we're wondering if our '82 westy can make through any of the drive through trees. Many years ago I know we barely made it through one (scraping sound on the fiberglass!) but I can't remember which one it was. Are there are any that are a definite "yes" or a definite "no"? Also, we are always happy to hear of any "must-do" dog-friendly hikes or adventures in the area.
Thanks!

IIRC all the drive thru trees give a height clearance. You need to measure your individual westy to know if it can fit.

I know I got my '87 westy thru at least one in 2015. YMMV.

I folded my mirrors in and made it. That said, I thought I heard that one of the trees is no longer doing this because of damage.

We were just up there over easter - beautiful area. We tried a couple of the drive through trees, but the ones at the southern end of the avenue of the giants would not fit our westy - too tight. We do have 215/65R16 tires and new schwenk springs so height was a factor.

Note that all of the redwood park areas are closed to dogs and we saw many of the evil no dog signs around. So if you want to go through the redwoods with your dog you will need to find a trail that does not have the evil sign on it.

We were primarily in the Humboldt grove and Rockefeller grove areas. The drive through the Rockefeller grove is highly worth it with many sans-canine hiking areas.

Good luck and have a great trip.

We have 215/65/16's and GoWesty 1.5" lift springs with the Yakima box. The Tour Through tree near Klamath is taller.

Looks like an 1900s Tourist Trap to me.

I'm sorry, but what a waste, unless I am missing something.

Well my kids thought it was a blast so it was well worth the $5 to drive through it. I did it as a kid too. Yes it appears you are missing something.

The "Drive Thru Tree" in Klamath, as pictured above, has the most clearance. The road above Trees of Mystery is closed intermittently due to sliding right now. All National Parks and most CA state parks have dog laws, not just up here, weird comment above (evil Rolling Eyes ?)? Rockefeller Grove does not have many dog friendly trails IMO and the Eel is low right now. Please check out all the local places to eat while you are up here! I would come over HWY 199 or 299 from 5 personally, as I do not like 36 or 20 at all.

Thanks for the replies everyone! And Lcolon and Goldtooth thanks for the added pictures! I don't care if its a tourist trap, I think my kid (and us!) will also think that $5 is well worth it! Also, I don't think that it is a tourist trap if you know exactly what you're paying for and get what you paid for. I'm always a little disappointed that some people here just post a reply to let you know that they think your idea is stupid.

No, the idea is fine. Didn't mean to imply that. Cutting a car tunnel through one of the Seven Natural Wonders of North America was a little off putting to actually see it.

Uh...it's been happening for the last hundred years. Surprised you are surprised by that.

Yeah that would be frowned upon trying that now!

When went through there was a kid named Adam Smith working there. For $2.50 he would photoshop your Bus into the tree picture and send it to you.

What do you tell your insurance company if you get stuck in a redwood tree?
