This engine came with a parts car years ago. I ran it for a few years. It smoked and burnt a lot of oil. Set it to the side for the last 15 years in the garage.
Recently I picked up a project 72 standard beetle. The motor that came with it had water in it and when I drained the oil a bunch of white chunks came out before the oil started flowing out. Like kitty litter. I’m assuming it’s internal corrosion from the water getting in . So I’m thinking this motor is shot.
The motor that has been sitting for years is my next option. I was hoping I could buy 1600 pistons and cylinders and use the heads off the bad motor. And throw something together. Any tips on this will be greatly appreciated

The existing serial number isn't useful for identification as it's been applied after the original serial was milled/ground off -- other than the obvious marks on the case and a step where material has been removed, you can also see a small part of the original serial located just off the bottom left corner of the H.
To identify what you have you'll need to look underneath to determine whether it's a single or dual relief case, look for part numbers cast into the sides of the sump, and look for other identifying characteristics such as cylinder register size, diameter of the oil pump studs and oil passages, whether case savers are present, etc. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

The sides of the oil sump have been milled also
The case was painted gold at some point
It has 3 bolt holes in the front of the block. Not sure what for?
The oil pump studs are 8mm
I don’t see any relief plugs in the bottom
The cylinder studs are 8mm. No inserts or case savers
The same studs on the bad 1600 are 9mm

So would that confirm that it’s from a 68. To. 70 bus. So it would be a 1500 or 1600. I’m just saying that because my 64 bus dose not have these holes but it’s definitely not the original engine . _________________ when all else fails get a bigger hammer

Take another look, you might need to clean off some grime. All cases have at least one, starting in 1970 they had two.

That may not be a good thing. GEX was rather fond of painting their cases gold and their quality isn't exactly held in high regard.
With the engine sitting for a while and its condition not really known, the best way forward would be to completely tear the engine down for a good cleaning and inspection at the very least. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |
