Out of a combination paranoia/caution, and "what the heck, while we're here", while the trans axle was off the motor, I decided to replace the clutch. It turns out to have been a wise choice, and justifies my paranoia.
Quite simply, the flywheel turned out to be dished, with a band somewhere between 3/4 and a full inch taking almost all the contact, while the innermost part showed where the surface had been brushed/scored - scoring was definitely visible.
Wear on the clutch face towards the flywheel confirmed this.
Purely out of curiosity, has anyone else run into this?

It's common to resurface flywheels to get a good clean contact, but what you're describing sounds more extreme than anything I've run across.
