Just got an Empi external oil filter adapter in and it's a total piece of <CENSORED>.
The threaded nipple is NOT 90's to where the filter seal touches the adapter. This leaves a large gap where it doesn't seal. Going to call and ask for a refund tomorrow. Tired of Empi.
Who else makes an adapter bracket that actually works? Is the SCAT one any better? _________________ North Bay Air Cooled - VW Club in Napa, CA

I use EMPI products every day at work, yes some stuff needs work but you have to know what works and what doesn't. I've had very good results with the filter adapters but you need to sand the filter surface on a belt sander. Just saying, no need to keep bashing them every time someone gets a bad part, I installed many high dollar parts that were "Made in America" and had to modify almost everything, need a machine shop (which I have) to work on these cars. Not standing up for them but I just get real tired when someone has a problem with a part, most of the time it's the customer's fault and wasn't installed correctly. No one ever say's that they had a great experience with their product, I installed 3 different disc brake kits this week and never had an issue with any of them. Sorry about the rant just venting |

Vent away. I was too if I'm being honest.. This is the 2nd time I've had one of their oil filter brackets come messed up. I've used some good Empi products, and some bad ones. _________________ North Bay Air Cooled - VW Club in Napa, CA

While I'm still here.. I'll ask a dumb question. I also bought the EMPI Outward Facing Exhaust Flange Oil Filter Mount. This is the one at attaches to the exhaust. It comes with 2 spacers. I'm guessing these go between the exhaust and the mount? _________________ North Bay Air Cooled - VW Club in Napa, CA

Yes, get one that has hose ports on both sides. You can use the extra ports for your temperature or pressure senders _________________ modok wrote:

Had the same problem. Ordered 3 from cip1. Finally got a refund.
Had to Rube Goldberg adapt a left side facing adapter to work...
EMPI has known about the problem since last fall. October I think it was.
I had to wait for them to authorize a credit from cip1.. |

I have been using an adapter instead of the stock oil cooler since back in 1976. It was part of an external oil cooler kit sold in 1976 by Claude's Buggies (CB Performance now).
Unfortunately I can't upload of photo of that adapter as it's been unseen by me since 1986, lives inside the fan shroud on the 1835cc engine in my 1971.
I don't know if this one is different from the EMPI unit, but I myself use the type of gasket shown here.
Perma Cool has quite a few adapters for attaching an oil filter too. https://www.shop.perma-cool.com/117-Bolt-On-Adapter-VW-air-cooled-117.htm

Feel free to start another topic on how to connect pipe thread to a hose.
Think of those fittings as a..... serving suggestion only. |

Or you could use a 'Made in USA' Perma Cool one: GB 250. The nipple is at 90' and the oilways and seating surface are fully machined
