I have a 1972 Marina Blue Super Beetle. I am going to be getting new wheels and tires ad the other day I was looking at pictures online. I saw a picture of a 2003 "Ultima Edicion" and I really like the look. I am thinking about going ahead and making a few more cosmetic changes to mine to kind of get that same look. Going to do the wide white walls for sure. My question is that I was noticing the steering wheel in that 2003 Mexican Beetle. Does anybody know if there is an aftermarket padded wheel I can for my 72 that looks like a more modern VW steering wheel? Thanks for any recommendations. |

I "think" that a late Mexi Beetle would have the smaller steering column shaft, which VW changed to late in the 1974 model year. That kind of limits your options in trying a later VW steering wheel. _________________ Andy T.

I do not know how to fix this. All I can say is it all works fine for me with what I use, Firefox. |

Yes... they size of the shaft changed in 74 so a post 74 wheel will not fit you 72.
You could change the steering column to a later model to make it fit. _________________ Glenn

You can actually change only the steering shaft itself, like I did on my '74, but only if you're a geek like me and have multiple steering columns laying around. The column part is just a tube, but if you change to the later shaft, you have to get the proper bearings for the steering wheel end. You also need the correct nut to hold the steering wheel on (however, Bruce, on here, sells new ones), as well as the steering wheel lock/ignition cylinder holder....you know what, in hind sites, what Glenn said is probably the easier course of action.
