What is your opinion on replacing the upright oil cooler for a dog house cooler on an earlier engine? good idea? No? I know it takes more than just the cooler.
the engine is a HO 1500

Santo, I bought a single-cab bus that had had a fairly new engine but ran very hot. The engine builder placed an aftermarket oil cooler in front of the fan opening. Hot, hot, hot!
I switched to a doghouse arrangement, and the difference in oil temperature was amazing. And, with the doghouse, offset oil cooler, and larger fan, I wasn’t pre-heating the cooling air for number 3 cylinder that an upright cooler would have done.
Do it! You won’t regret it.

Yes, I think it's a good idea if done correctly. Either get a captive insert for the case at top left, or take off the two small tins to access the mounting nut.

I've used an external oil cooler over the fan opening on my 1835cc DP engine since back in 1976, and it's worked fine for me. Arizona, and with dealer-added AC.
Remember that doghouse stuff was hard to find and costly back in 1976; just saying that this is what I run in my 1971, with lid standoffs, not really recommending this to others. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Do it correctly, add the dog house oil cooler, make sure you have the proper components as well as the thermostat and flaps if you do not have them. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.
Numbers Matching VW's are getting harder to find. Source out the most Stock vehicle and keep that way. You will be glad you did.

I recently did a doghouse conversion on my stock 67 1500, made a big difference. I sourced German tin and used a Hoover bit and sealed the cooler pieces correctly. |

Don't buy a Chinese dog house fan shroud as they don't have the internal routing pieces to correctly route the cooling air. |

I would suggest buying a new cooler, you never know what could be in that cooler! |

I’d clean it and see. Bet it will work as designed, save your money. |
