I offered to help some nice folks from town find a new home for their '86 last year. That was just as the pandemic was starting to hurt, and I cautioned them to wait a bit. Meanwhile, they took it on a few local rides, and ended up having it towed home each time, so they got frustrated. I said to wait for spring, so they put it away in a barn for the winter, and I just happened to be in a position to make an offer on it myself. So, today I went, got the paperwork finalized, and drove it the 6 miles 'home', no problems, and here it is, right at home in the midst of my families Old Folks Home converted to Old Volks Home... I'll adjust my tagline sometime soon, I guess.
A few pic's of this lovely (and somewhat rusty) White '86 Full Westy with Brown interior, and an auto trans (my first Vanagon/Auto).
Anyway, it is obvious that I have some sort of mental problem... More VWs are here to roost. I have to kick some non-vw's out of the yard ASAP, and make room in my bus row

Ya, truth told, its me that needs the love and attention. I have been in a battle with a hip repair from my 20's that was done with a bone graft, as I was too young to have a replacement, and I will soon be beyond my ability to overcome the pains of that imperfect work. A full hip replacement is now imminent, and I will not be able to operate a manual trans for a while. Self serving, and best intentioned as it was, I am determined to sort this one out as well as I have my present daily drive, my '87 with 320K on it _________________ '87 Westy 'Flossie','86 Westy 'R1','86 tintop GL - Subi2.2 'J2','83.5 stock tintop L 'ZoomBus','74 Karmann Ghia, '63 Notch |

A/C really makes that a decent rig. If the trans is functioning well, you'll come to really like the auto feature. _________________ Casey--

Very surprised as well, looks like it is true though, I got under it, and feel confidant that the Speedo cable is original, and the odo/speedo worked as expected on the way home.
As per usual though, you are right, its going to take some time, and effort/dollars to get this back to something I would take a long way from home with. Its been 6 years since I got my '87, and I am just getting some of the final bits done that are non-cosmetic. Double time, for the next few years, clearly!! _________________ '87 Westy 'Flossie','86 Westy 'R1','86 tintop GL - Subi2.2 'J2','83.5 stock tintop L 'ZoomBus','74 Karmann Ghia, '63 Notch |

Well congratulations, but if they had to have it towed each time they went out I hope your hip heals quick if you have to push it!

Congrats and don’t dread the hip surgery too much. Mom has had three, and she is 90. The last one was in 2018 and she was walking in three days. _________________ .ssS! |

Thanks! And it's good to hear of success on your mom's hip!! I only fear it, as is my right hip, and I usually make heave use of it on my brake pedal... Gas is easy on my present condition, but brake is getting more painful, slowly, over the years. With an Auto, I can drive Nascar style, one foot on the gas, and the other on the brake _________________ '87 Westy 'Flossie','86 Westy 'R1','86 tintop GL - Subi2.2 'J2','83.5 stock tintop L 'ZoomBus','74 Karmann Ghia, '63 Notch |

There's lots to go through on this one, but it has been decently maintained, at least by looking through the folder nicely kept up by all the POs. Safety first, yes, the fuel lines were replaced, but it's been long enough that its time again. Tires are out of date, that sort of thing. Then on to the pop-top tent and seal are shot and leaking. So, I have it in the garage for the time being.. It's supposed to go out on Vanagon Hill, according to my dad, but not til I can get it to stop leaking..
You still making that trip in June? My fly in fishing trip got put off yet another year, I guess the border is still closed, and my dad just recovered from a little bleeding in his brain, so perhaps my days of fly in's with him are now just memories.
Mrs. Black is starting to mention the North Shore more often, and another trip out to Colorado too, perhaps there is hope for a June trip after all. PM me on your plan, if you want, maybe I can swing it.
But, for sure, at some point this summer we will get to 2H and find you!!
I don't mind the Pastel White at all.. But, there is no color that is better for an Iowa Gravel Road dweller than Metallic Bronze, I guess... I don't think I would want to go to that length though, so I am looking for a decently close and inexpensive option for the L90D (R1) touchup that I will be doing.
Oh, and can a stock 2.1 with auto really be THAT much of a dog?!?!? I've gotten so used to my '87 with tuned exhaust, upgraded rockers, etc that a bone stock engine seems really really wimpy!!!
PS. DON"T push a variable voltage regulator (240turbo.com) up past 14.5 ... 14.9 was a lot of fun, but I'd not suggest doing that to an old Vanagon's harness. Thanks for the healthy skepticism in your remarks from back then _________________ '87 Westy 'Flossie','86 Westy 'R1','86 tintop GL - Subi2.2 'J2','83.5 stock tintop L 'ZoomBus','74 Karmann Ghia, '63 Notch |

It was hand built by the second PO, and I like it too, it fits great. It just needs to be "browner" to match up with the (ugh) brown interior.
Did I mention I don't like Brown interior yet?
I DON"T LIKE BROWN INTERIOR!!!
There, got that off my chest for the day.

In that Odometer shot - which in itself is amazing to see just over 74,000 miles (=119,000 Canadian miles ), I see you even have the elusive, never found, clock setting pin!!!! _________________ '88 VW Westfalia
