Hey friends. So, my bug is back on the road. I’ve been having some issues in the last day or so after swapping back to my newly restored big-cap distributor.
At first, I admit I made a mistake and was timing with the vacuum line on. Since correcting that, and going from scratch I will occasionally still feel the car hesitate. It sounds healthy as all when idling and when giving it gas too. 99% of the time it feels fine when accelerating even. But occasionally I will feel a little “ooh, that was odd” sensation in my lower back - please tell me I’m not the only one to diagnose these things from my lumbar?
Now, the car was running insanely rich - my eyes were burning. I turned the screw all the way closed until the car was ready to stall then I backed off. I heard the engine speed increase, and later decrease again. I turned it back to the right, again raising and eventually hit the edge where the speed would decrease and I opened it back up a half turn.
Could I be fuel starving it?

Under what conditions does this occur?

Occasionally, under acceleration.
Not regularly reproducible or within a predictable range which is what made me suspect fuel.

It seems nobody has any ideas, so I'll throw out some guesses.

A fuel problem should be more reproducible, I would think. Something so random, intermittent, and temporary sounds like the beginning of an ignition problem. Maybe arcing plug wires, shorting condenser, etc. Maybe plugs are fouling or nearing the end of their life?

Just some thoughts based on your description...
