|
|
I am thinking of making an offer on a 69 panel van "field salvage". It has not run in 30 years or so, was probably a one owner van that was parked when the owner died in about 1990. Looks arrow straight, not even a parking lot ding, but there is some rust. I am sure the brakes and shocks are history, wiring will depend on the rodent situation, but since it did not smell like rat piss and the upholstery is decent, I have hopes there.
What do you think? Fix the rust and leave the paint as is and have a character mobile? Sell it to to a surfer that needs a mobile dressing room? It seems to be very original, though it is definitely a low end vehicle with few options.
Thanks!
Chris

Love the stereo delete. Hard to believe a 69 panel lived it's whole life w/o tunes. _________________ 62 Single Cab

killer van, really rare color for a panel. only pics of the underside will tell the tale. windshield rust doesn’t look too bad! _________________ '74 transporter panel

I think it is not bad underneath. The area around here is fairly dry so parked cars don't rust like they do in wet climates.
Yes, that is the auxiliary BN4 heater on the driver's side. I am not so surprised that the radio delete is still there, 30 years ago when it was parked I doubt that the radio coverage in the Yukon was very good!
What do you figure, worth fixing? I can do a Patina mobile by simply getting the engine running and putting brakes in it. Or I could give it a repaint and fix the rust. Not sure what it would be worth and whether it would be better as a custom or a resto, since it is so original.

Agreed.
While bays in general are increasing in value, seems like the panels - even though significantly less plentiful, aren’t rising at the same rate. _________________ 1979 Transporter (sold)

that's the problem with panels. super fuckin neat....zero value
i'd fix the rust, do a few blends and run it. looks straight and doesn't have any 70's vanner porno windows hacked into it.
ultimately depends on price of admission. if that dash pad isn't cracked, it's GOLD (68/9 only) _________________

As it sits, what do you figure is fair for it? It has parts value and could be used to fluff up a Westy project, or I could get it running and sell it.
Funny thing is, I am doing a Westy, as I mentioned, and it is also Montana red. I could literally paint both at the same time! Of course that would mean body work could not be avoided....

I’d offer $1500 and keep it. It would be a shame to part out such a nice looking panel. People in this forum don’t like them, but they’re always the big hit at the shows around the southwest. Everyone has a camper and a deluxe, not everyone has a panel, especially a bay panel. Lots of split panels out there, but not too many bay ones. _________________ __________

I have a brother that lives in LA and is into the surfing scene, so I half considered driving it down there and selling it in that market. It would be neat to have as a parts runner or general errand vehicle, now if I could just convince the wife that it is not one vehicle too many in our yard....
TDC, How bad do you really want a bay Panel?

I wish I'd have found it! A panel with a gasoline heater. That's living. |
