I just got my buggy and the hole in the hood for the gas tank is centered. The tank I got with the car is on the left (or right) back (or front). I looked up gas tanks on Moore parts and didn't see any with a center cap. What tanks have the center cap? Otherwise more glass work as I move the hole.
edit: not me pictured nor the car in it's current state.

I would modify a new (never had gas in it) tank. No need to mess up the fiberglass unless you're doing some of that anyway. None came with a center fill, unless maybe the gauge sender hole has been modified into the fill. New tanks are relatively cheap. |

There is a lot out there to turn the fuel sending hole into a filler neck if that lines up right for u _________________ it's more fun loud and dirty |

Modify tank to fit opening in buggy hood or modify buggy hood to fit openings in tank.....
IF paint job and design are sacred, you have to go with first choice....
In my situation I had about three opening in hood where various people over years modded hood a lot, my solution was to remove all the bad crap, decide where I wanted opening for hood and tank, cut neck off new tank set tank in body dropped hood in place and drilled hole (1/8 inch) through hood and tank as a locator and fabbed/moded as necessary...

If you are gonna modify and weld then why lose the gas gauge?
Get the right tank, cut off the filler neck, install the tank and mark where the filler neck should go, drill a hole for the new neck, and bring it somewhere that can weld the old filler hole and weld in the neck to the new location.
