How does one get the shift rod out of a 73 super beetle to clean the rust off?

You can YouTube it, there are plenty for Standard Beetle and a few for Super Beetle, as they are a little different.

SLADE has a pretty good one for the Super.

If you already had planned to replace bushing, GREAT!!
If not, you may want to do so while the rod is out, save some trouble later.

Look under car behind front apron and you should see a reinforcement plate like this mounted with several bolts

Remove the bolts, and behind the 2 bolts at rear (these holes for reference) is the access hole.

Note, you may have a fan there instead, in either case, the access hole is in same place.
