I had a lot of work done to my van recently -- notably a rebuilt AT and EJ22.
Any recommendations for oil changes + level checks during the first couple thousand miles? _________________ Ben

l'd check the levels every 100 miles for the first 1k.
change fluids at 1k for the first time.
l change my oil at 3k to 5k intervals, the trans, longer. _________________ markswagen {mobile mechanic} san diego area all early VW's cared for.

In the first oil fill after a rebuild, it is important to NOT use synthetic oil. The reason is that synthetic oil generally prevents the best seating of the piston rings.
On an engine rebuild, I would generally change the oil after 100 miles or so since that is when a huge amount of break-in swarf arises. I would then, change the oil again after, say, 1,000 miles. On the third oil fill, I would only then go to synthetic oil.
You only get one chance to do the best possible ring break-in, so try to get some load on those rings, both in compression and with trailing throttle. You don't need to rev the snot out of the engine to do this. It's harder, I admit, to do this in an automatic trans van. _________________ '86 Syncro Westy SVX |

ask the guy who rebuilt your AT
maybe drop the cover and change the filter in 10k, or 5k, or 20k... _________________ .... |
