I have three transaxles for my street legal Sandrail with 31" tires and my current trans it is 2500 rpm at 60.

#1 one in my buggy is a AH, it is a two sided case, with a late style clutch, and has a bad 1st gear and shift fork.

I have two core/spare transaxles

#2 is a AH with the early style clutch and a two sided diff housing.

#3 is a AH with one sided diff housing and a late style clutch

if I assume the current trans is a 4.12 ring and pinion.. I wonder if the #3 spare with the one sided case , stamped AH is a 3.88 or 4.12????

They are all three AH transaxles. The more I read the worse it gets, one place says all 1 sided cases are 3.88 and .82 4th gear and another says a AH is 4.12 no matter what. I have even read that all of the late style clutch transaxles are freeway flyers with 3.88.

What ratio do/could I have and what's a easy way to tell without tearing apart, I would like to use the one sided case but not if it is a 3.88 and .82

can I convert the #2 trans to the late clutch by bolting on a throwout bearing support?

AH transaxles came from VW with a 4.12 r&p, and an 0.89 4th. VW never had a factory combo with a 3.88 r&p and 0.82 4th. The most common 3.88’s had a 0.93 4th, which isn’t much different than the 4.12/0.89. The AN transaxles in Ghias had a 0.89 4th.

What are you trying to accomplish, and what size is your engine? Your rail doesn’t way as much as a Beetle, but a 3.88/0.82 puts quite a load on any engine. With a 31 inch tire, I would wonder if the cooling fan would be spinning fast enough to overcome the heat created by the engine.

I’ve never heard of the 4th gear trick, but VW used a 2.06 2nd in all the 4.12/3.88 transaxles. Shift a trans into 2nd, and count the revolutions with both CV cups spinning in the same direction. 3.88 = 8 revolutions, and a 4.12 = 8.5

I have a 2021 motor, thick wall 92's and a stroker crank. I don't really want to have any lower rpm in high gear. I am happy all ah are 4.12!!!!
I do not want a 3.88 unless I had stock size tires

I ended up using the single sided transaxle and it was the same as the one that came in my buggy. it must have a 4.12 r&p!!!
