I asked this question last year and forgot about it. My original fuel sender gets flakey when the tank goes below a 1/2 or 3/8. It’ll just hover above
Empty. Fill it and it’s fine til that point. I know the new sending units have been deemed “crappy”. What alternative do I have in either a repair or nos?

If you have a dvm and can read ohms scale you can verify that the problem is with the sender and not the gauge hanging up in the 1/2 to xx.

Set the ohms scale to the lowest setting, 200 ohms scale.

Remove the center wire from the sender and measure the resistance, key off.

When the gauge stops moving do the ohms measurements.
From the below chart the resistance should be <>33 ohms for 1/4 and around R 45 ohms...

Although the pix below is for a Type 1 the resistances are the same for all VW electronic gauges.

Wouldn't a 70 have a tube style sender?

Yes but the resistances are the same. Has to be for the gauge to work as it is a fixed resistance and the voltage from the vibrator or regulator is fixed at <>5.1vdc.

Agreed, same ohms regardless of style.

Tube senders are all the same inside, the bus one is a little longer, but the repair method is identical.

Mine looks like a linkage with a white float at the end of the wire.
