Type 1 and early 002 transaxles also have threaded output shafts. (Not sure about late 002/091). I have had to compress the part in question on T1 transaxles, using the exact oil pump tool shown in Ray's diagram.

Just for the info of those who might be thinking they need to acquire one of those special tools to get
their joint flanges back on, all I ever needed was a deep socket that goes over the diff stub axle and rests
on the circlip. A medium rap on the socket will "compress" the spacer/spring/thrustring/whatever underneath
and allow the circlip to snap into its groove. I just wish getting that damn circlip off was as easy. _________________ '67 bug: seized by the authorities
