I am sure this has been debated befor but cannot find it.
Why is it that altleast some 912 engines wich has a pretty simular fan housing/cooling system that the non doghouse t1, does not have a thermostat, but vw has?
My 912 has no thermostat but still seems to warm up fine and oil temp is normally in the 80-100c range |

I thought that at least all the 912's had them. Could be wrong tho. Are you sure yours wasn't removed at one point in its life? _________________ 1967 Bug ( the daily rod )

Ya I'm not really sure, my father's '67 912 has a thermostat. I also see 356 and 912 thermostat parts for sale. I thought that all, or at least 95%, had them like Erik G but again, not positive. _________________ 1967 Bug ( the daily rod )

I believe the thermostat is located behind the fan shroud, inside the engine compartment, so to only activate heated air to the carbs.
But I may be wrong... |

Recycling hot air into the engine compartment will aid some in warming the the engine. Once the engine is warm it stops the hot air to the carbs. My 57a coupe had the system. Dan

The 912E?
Is the control (pressure) to the oil cooler different on 616 engines than t1? |

912E = T4 motor. Although being 2.0L, it was weaker than the 1600cc 616 motor.
Yes, pressure control is similar on the 616 engine.
The thermostat on 356/912 motors (616) is for pre-heat only. Not all had pre-heat either. Some had nothing.
All depends on what level of trim you purchased. |

You would expect engineers to make the correct decisions when comes to control of engine.
I can understand the variables. My T-4 upright fan conversion is the only conversion that I know of that uses a thermostat.
Power to Weight had a lot to do with the selection of the temp, of the thermostat.
In cool weather my bug ran like it had carb problems. I was using a stock T-1 80c Thermostat the came on too fast. The bug was not reaching running temp??
Then I checked and noticed in my parts collection that a T-4 used a 90c.
The gave the engine enough time to warm up.
Good example of what the engineers must have went through.
The T-4 was hardly working to push the light bug, which it was not designed. _________________ email: [email protected]
