I just noticed that Ron is moving on from his Syncro and using the proceeds to buy a sailboat.
I know I will miss his smiling face a LOT.

When my son purchased his 1985 Westy, he said "Dad, I would love us to both have a Syncro and go camping together." We did a conversion on his, buying a donor tin top Syncro and swapping the Westy top and insides. I purchased a great 1987 Syncro and for years, built what we wanted.
That dream came true and for a few years we lived it. He ended up selling his van for a down payment on a home. I am in the process of selling our cherished Syncro at the moment. It has taken us all over North America. From Newfoundland to Alaska. And we have so many good memories and it has been worth every penny. The friendships made and times with others has changed our lives and made us better people.
Buy it, and live it. Learn to wrench. Plan on spending double, maybe triple, what you think. Especially if you get into the Syncro realm. Go do it! Life is too short to wait.
Good luck!
Ron

Ron is a great guy. We have had many conversations about Syncros and other Platforms. The first time I met him in person, at Syncrofest, he was so kind. We ended up camping together and he even prepared a steak for my dog Frank. I camped again with him at Descend on Bend a few years ago. He for sure will be missed in the Vanagon community, but I still hope we will have a chance to camp together sometime. |

You are all so kind.
Looking back over the years of ownership, I can truly say that this Vanagon has changed my life. It is definitely one of the best platforms to build out a camping vehicle.
It teaches you to slow down and enjoy the road more. We used to kid each other to watch for coins on the side of the road as we climbed mountain passes.
You also learn how to be a "MacGyver" and make repairs along the way.
I'm getting ready for retirement. We are looking to get back on the coast and enjoy sailing off into the sunset. I have found a good home for this incredible specimen of a Syncro Westfalia. It will be well taken care of.
I will miss everyone and the love we share for these vehicles. But I still plan to rub shoulders with each of you. It has been a great ride over the years!
Here are a few pics from early on:
And here is our new platform. Not as nostalgic as a Vanagon, but very capable:

Something about sailing off into the sunset and it is unfortunately a little bit negative.
One place to look for sailboats to buy is Hawaiee. Retired couples who have spent a working life apart for so many hours a day with a dream of sailing off for a world cruise suddenly come to realize that being together 24hrs a day on a sailboat becomes "frictional" and by the time they reach Hawaiee they both can't stand each other and put the boat up for sale and go their separate ways.
I don't see this happening to you because of the time spent together in the Syncro has been part of your relationship.
Just saying Hawaiee, next Fiji, is a good place to look for a boat! 😁
Check out the Allied "Sea Mistress", a ketch built in the 60-70's before they knew how strong fiberglass was and overbuilt it...the keel is nice and thick. ⛵ _________________ This free advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.

Thank you for your inspirational photos, videos, and help. Thank you specifically for the help when making my custom "aux fuel tank". Good luck and well done on the Syncro! _________________ Brandon

You've had quite an adventure in your Syncro and that is really impressive. Glad to know it's going to a good home. _________________ '87 Syncro

I'm surprised it didn't come with the extra parts. The parts hoard is always a plus. _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia Triple knob (bastard)

It's a shame to see you go.
You had what was probably, THE most famous Syncro!
I can't begin to count how many ads I've seen it in!
I wish you well on the next leg of your journeys, and envy the lucky SOB that bought your van! _________________ 1990 Feldjäger Syncro AAZ

Another Rfq for boat info. I’ve got a too-big-to mention boat on San Diego harbor, a 32 on Lake Ontario, and the infamous Mac 26 which follows me on the eastern seaboard. I sail Harpoons on inland lakes upstate too
“sail” is used loosely here , and reflects me being passed by everyone while I sit in my thumb, knowing I’ll end up in first place by paying off the PHRF guy _________________ .ssS! |

a syncro is a hole on the land that you throw money into, and a boat is a hole in the water that you throw money into! good luck Ron! well miss your amazing posts. _________________ '88Doka JX td
