is m8 x 30mm the correct size?

When removing them I remember access was tricky. What is the smallest head size on the bolts people have used?

Stainless with copper nuts? or brass?

also the little 'caps' that cover the gap where the HE meets the fan shroud...what screws do I use? The jar of bolts and nuts soaking in mineral spirits from the exhaust , along with the new gaskets disappeared from my front porch.. Confused I think my mail man is a huffer... Laughing

For the caps....N 10 714 3 in the parts book. They list 6mm x 12mm cheese head (slotted). About half that I have found are also the self tapping variety with the little cutter slot.

So do you mean the three bolts on each heat exchanger where it bolts to the muffler? Do you have a CA bus with cat and crossover pipe or a standard bus?
Most of the standard bus have studs protruding from the muffler and just nuts behind the flange on the end of the he (8mm x 1.25). Copper when you can get them for those. Not sure if you have a different configuration.

I just use Copper Silicone for the gaskets between the HEs and the fan shroud and for the caps. I apply a uniform bead and flatten it to about the right thickness. I then let the pieces sit until the silicone skins over well but isn't gelled all the way through. This allows the silicone to conform to all the irregularities of the old dinged up parts, and if some of the still liquid silicone breaks through the skin then it helps lock the pieces to each other preventing wear and noise.

Is this a stock ‘76 exhaust system? An earlier system?

Using a “VW carburetor wrench” (google it) allows one to use all 13mm M8 exhaust fasteners. This wrench is almost mandatory if you have the earlier trapezoid exhaust flange. Very handy on later triangle flanges as well.

M6x15mm philips head screws are my preference for the cap pieces, the head allows them to start easier while the extra few mm in length can help them start easier if things are a little bent.

Good luck,
Robbie

That’s the one. I won’t do 72-74 exhausts without it.

I wish I had checked your tour dates earlier, I would have inquired about booking you between Nashville and Williamsburg---Roanoke, VA.

Thanks for all your help on here.
