As if I really needed another project, or that y’all wanted to see me desecrate another VW, I procured this beast after a remarkably short vulturing process that consisted of asking if it was for sale, which was met with an immediate “NO”, to which I asked if it was ok to periodically check back, to a “maybe” a month or so later, to “I’ll take….” a couple weeks later.

After convincing myself that it was a ‘71, I was thoroughly confused to find that it was actually a ‘69. The owner said that someone previous to himself had swapped in a TypeIV engine & I am assuming that is when it got the later suspension & brakes… we’ll get to find out just how much of a mess this is gonna be.

It’s a Westy & from what I can tell, it was yard-saled in the ‘90s & it comes with a correct-ish, completely new TypeI engine from a now defunct local Volkswagen parts store & machine shop.

rearview mirror is 69 only. 68 was the same length but the stick was polished and not rubber coated

Yesterday I collected most of the parts & after reuniting them with the Bus, I extracted it from it’s den.

Yep, with equal parts of horror & amazement, just like watching a pack of feral dogs eating the ass out of a deer carcass… You just can’t not watch, & once you do, you can’t unsee it. Laughing

Today I tried to assess exactly what I’m working with & exactly how much is missing.

I still need to collect a few more parts, most of which is ruined cabinetry & the waffled front bumper & the windshield.

This Westy is probably one of the least rusty buses that I have ever owned, including the ‘72 highroof I had in ‘87.

I spent some time cleaning the cab floor, & aside from a patch by the PO, it’s pretty solid.

Even underneath, while it has plenty of surface rust, there isn’t anything that’s rotted.

The engine is complete, with just a few crappy aftermarket parts, but it’s all new.

Well…. I honestly tried to do the right thing & got a few quotes to get a proper paint job on this thing….

Yeah, FUCK that!

So I drug it back to the shop & began scraping and scrubbing the moss & mildew off.

In anticipation of my new window gaskets, I started prepping the window apertures. Not wanting to allow the rust to continue festering under the new gaskets, I cleaned, treated & painted the surround & well, got carried away.

It’s been bumped in the nose & someone half-ass tried to plaster it back into a more presentable shape, even more pronounced when in one color. IDGAF, goin with it.

While the windshield was still out, I cleaned, primed, & painted the top of the dash too.

What were the quotes you got for paint? Was it just paint or did it include bodywork? What about stripping?

Quotes started at $4,500, no body work, no stripping, no jams & that was avoiding the high dollar resto shops.

While waiting for someone to show up, I decided to take inventory of some of the crap in the interior & sort out what belongs & what doesn’t.

You should do a post on craigslist asking to barter a paint job.

That sounds like a perfect way to get screwed.

I have tried the barter thing for a paint job, and that fucking thing never cured, it was still tacky 9 months later.

I have also shelled out for a few nice paint jobs only to be disappointed in the quality, or to have it destroyed within days (and even 45 minutes) by some asshole door dinging it or worse (like the 8y/o that tried riding their bike between two cars only to gouge a 10” swath of paint out of the fender when they fell over). That’s money that can’t be recovered & after those instances, I’m just not willing to risk it. I sure as hell ain’t gonna trust that some dipshit responding to a Clist ad is capable of any thing other than trying to scam me out of whatever barter and/or the vehicle itself.

I enjoy driving my projects too much than to be constantly worried about something happening to it, and I’d probably kill some stupid fuck for leaning on it for a selfie if I did blow $10,000 on paint job.

Alright, I have decided to venture into doing a TDI swap into this beast.

That being said, I am going to do it with as much of the shit that I have lying around as possible. Knowing that the ratios in the stock transmission are no where near where they’re needed, I need to opt for a different transmission. Since I don’t have the preferred 6-rib at hand, and I’m too cheap buy a custom, regeared unit, I’m gonna go backwards & & stuff a TypeIII gear box in it (yeah, yeah, I know, they’re weaker.), what could possibly go wrong. Rolling Eyes Laughing

I have this transmission that I yanked out of the Ghiapet & it already has Bus flanges on it & I have a Kennedy adapter already, and, well… I also happen to have several TDI engine options.

I decided to go with a ALH from a MK4 Jetta due to being a bit easier to get parts for (than a 1z or AHU), and for the fact that this engine does not require a transfer pump like the later iterations.

For starters, I tossed the gas tank back in & slid the transmission into place to check how it fits.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Since no one makes a Bug into Bus mount, I get to fab one up. Before I do that though, I need to see where it needs to be for the engine to clear everything, so I bolted the adapter plate to the engine & stabbed it into the transmission & then stuffed the whole lump into the bus.

Having a 2004 Passat BHW engine on the floor, I thought that I’d swipe the engine mounts off & bolt them to the ALH & this is where VWs interchangeability said “nope”. The fourth mounting point needs to be in the same space as the ancillaries bracket.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Knowing that lopping this one ear off this bracket would render it worthless, I decided to make one out of some scrap steel/remnants. Needing to make a jig, but not wanting to use otherwise decent metal, I rummaged through the scrap pile & got some rotten old bus frame rail bits & proceeded to bolt them to the bracket & tack them together.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Once done, I have this hideous conglomeration of jagged metal.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Believe it or not, this will be the guide for my new mount bracket.
