I've never seen a DS number. That isn't in this table, either:
https://www.aircooled.net/vw-engine-codes/
It looks modified, as if the original was scraped off and a rebuild used this code.
More photos of the engine would help. |

Intake and thusly the heads are 40 HP which would have been a 1200cc.
Could have had:
1. a 1500/1600 stock crankshaft put in it, or even more stroke.
2. a set of 83mm piston and cylinder installed.
3. Could have had the case and heads machined for 85.5mm or even larger piston and cylinders.
4. Could be anything of the above and more done to it.
Only way to tell is to remove heads to measure piston size and crankshaft stroke.
Take your time and get well soon! _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Yes it's a bugger at first. You feel really tired. My mother in-law had one put in a few years back. She just turned 95 and reckons that it is the only thing that makes her feel good these days. Every so often she gets a good kick and she perks up for the rest of the day. Hahaha.
Get well soon so you can play with your toys again. _________________ 1968 1500 RHD Lotus White Beetle since birth. In the hospital for major surgery
