Had to top off the tranny due to a leak I haven't fixed yet.
A few squeezes of this put in 1/2 a liter.
Used 3/16 tubing. Something wider would be easier.
Keys are 1) tight fit THROUGH the cap 2) hose goes to the bottom 3)consider teflon tape on plug for easier removal next time not to mention belter seal without having to crank on it to tighten.
Completely different than the hose to outside the wheelwell and having the funnel/hose continuing to drain (on the driveway) after tranny being full.

You can buy hand pumps that thread onto the those bottles at any flaps also. I prefer the pumps and i run a long hose so I can fill without being under the van |

Yeah, many commercial solutions (including taking it to a shop). was actually looking for a soap pump or something I already had around to repurpose exactly like you mentioned. Didn't have any of those - but had this piece of hose. Still have to get under to put the plug in so I had only one trip under to remove plug, fill, insert plug _________________ 83.5 Westy with Subaru 2.5, 4 spd manual, center seat, COLD A/C on 134a!, Winter camp heated with an Espar B4 gasoline furnace

Cool. If you start overflowing just release the bottle and it should reverse the flow and extract some oil from the trans. _________________ - Jim

Its a nice mod! I totally applaud any kind of creative solution, i was just pointing out about the hand pumps in case you were not aware. I hate filling the trans box personally. No matter what its messy and tedious and you will always spill. always.spill. |

Note the spec is 14 ft-lbs which is not very tight.
14 ft-lbs won't leak and its easy to remove.
14 ft-lbs is pulling 14 lbs on a one-foot long wrench.
Or 28 lbs on a 1/2 ft long wrench.
Or 21 lbs on a 9 inch long wrench.
Anyway it's not real tight.
But agreed teflon tape on the plug will seal well and prevent sticking.
But y'all are on the program of maintenence now...... right?
Many of the stuck plugs stories could be 'cuz the plug hadn't been removed in like 30 years. _________________

Hey, thanks and sorry my reply was kinda be snippy. I'm on a minimalism kick so the idea buying something I didn't need had me react. Heck, I get twitchy when I see the plethora of (wonderfully indulgent) tools and stuff I already have!....keep me away from the luxury told thread!!
Turns out, it occurs to me, I wasn't that creative after all. My subconscious just made this which can be seen in a lab or sports field near you.
Reminds me of a Flintstones episode I still frequently remember from watching reruns as a kid in the 80s where Fred "invents" a super strong glue only to discover one of the ingredients was an already existing super strong glue. Had me be sceptical of any "novel" things I "invent" or others are pitching....like the amazing insta pot which is effectively pressure cooker with a timer which you plug in instead of putting in a stove

Harbor Freight has a manual $7 transfer pump that comes with long hoses and works very well for tasks like this in tight spaces. Made filling a Dodge differential a relative breeze and will be used on the next VW trans fill.

Used a hand transfer pump down through the engine bay. Way more comfortable. _________________ 87 Titian Red Westfalia 2.0 VW I4 SOHC manual Ottawa, Ontario |

Fluid transfer pump is definitely the way to go. I use this one now, after years of using the type that screws into the top of a bottle. This thing is no joke. It seems like 5 pumps and a whole quart is transferred. https://smile.amazon.com/Performance-Tool-W1156-Tr...amp;sr=8-8 _________________ '87 Syncro

Pro tip for using the pumps, etc with things like gear oil:
Put it in a bucket of hot water for a while before getting started. It will be a bit thinner and pump much easier! |
If it is winter I set the gear oil on top of the heater vent near the door to the garage. |
or...I propose, any viscosity would be easy with an appropriate diameter hose

3/16 dia (cross section area 0.028 sq in) is tiny for room temp oil and it was easy with this tube system. Next time I'll try something like 1/2" (0.20 cross section area - about 7 times bigger) if I have it and see how that goes.....likely to be like sucking through a Boba tea straw vs. a standard straw.
What I liked most about this hose-through-the-cap approach was the simplicity. Crawl under once, remove plug, squeeze/fill, replace plug, crawl out. and no machine to clean afterwards.
Interesting to see other's perception of simplicity, _________________ 83.5 Westy with Subaru 2.5, 4 spd manual, center seat, COLD A/C on 134a!, Winter camp heated with an Espar B4 gasoline furnace
