Got a chance to try my Rube Goldberg awning today.
Expandable painters poles and a COSTCO window shade.
It performed well in a mild breeze. Not for hurricanes, or typhoons. |

Here's my Napa awning heim joint mod.
The heim joints or rod ends are from tacoma screw. The threaded inserts were custom made at a local machine shop and cost more than the awning . An hour at the machine shop, I thought they would've whipped em out in half an hour. Oh well support your local businesses I say, and they have done me a couple favors for cheap. The bolts are old cv joint bolts. The small spacers are pieces of 3/8" copper line painted silver. I did have to elongate the holes in the tracks for bolt head clearance. It could actually go lower if the legs collapsed any further, but won't make it all the way to the ground. Its easier to set up by myself now and will shed water as I intended. |

The main reason is to be able to lower it to shed water when raining. I noticed this when I used it for the first time and couldn't leave it unattended when it was raining. To lower it enough to shed without puddling it was torquing down on the connection with the channel too much. I suppose giving shade from the sun when its lower on the horizon too. One leg can be raised to create a trough to gather rain water too. |

Yes its 7/8" ID. I were to do it again which I would, I'D buy 2 star threaded inserts for 7/8" tube first. 2 star meaning two metal stars that compress upon instal into the tube. Then reverse engineer from there. I found there were only so many sizes as far as the female thread size in them. I did the joints on the legs too. You can see where they would be if they came off of the outer rail at a square angle. |

here's another possibility after careful measuring of the tube ID... keep the OEM hinge and add an articulated hinge. just install with a tubing cutter and some JB Weld.

Yep that will do it. I considered Teflon rod, but was too impatient to order it. What are you going to use for the spacers to center the rod end? |

I guess I'm still not sure why this is needed. My awning sets up with the legs at minimum length. The legs just are at a slight angle inward at the same tilt as the awning. They can still be guyed down and function perfectly. Seems like a lot of work for minimal gain to have vertical legs. _________________ 89 Westy 2.1 Auto |

There is a lot of stress on those tubes, joints and mounting points if you are set up with anything less than or greater than 90°.
Different comfort levels of damage potential.

Order went through monday evening. No e-mail saying come get it tuesday. Thought oh well interweb must be right! Thursday AM inbox said come get it, sorry about the delay. Just food for thought $106.68 out the door. Pretty happy! |

I just checked one of my local NAPA stores and found it available at one that is close by. Still on sale for $99, but with AAA discount, it came out to $85!
Should be able to pick it up tomorrow.
Now I just need to figure out how to mount it using my existing brackets. _________________ 1984 VW Vanagon Westfalia 1.9L Water-cooled (aka "Osmo") |
