30 years ago I could probably tell, forgot any starter nuance long ago. Laughing Wink Wink

She spins fast so I’m guessing 6V (and on a 40ho 1200 so imagine a 6V flywheel but haven’t pulled this motor yet). TIA

… our 1960 single cab was converted to 12v in 2007 - the coil, regulator, battery, choke element, bulbs and etc. are 12v. I better leave a note to the next steward, our son - that the truck still sports a 6v. flywheel and a 6v. starter - spins fast, but that won't mean anything to him - thanks for the reminder - z

Bet you could pull that starter and look at it, to determine the voltage

Ha ha, ya good reminder! Wink

And I seriously think I even used to be able to tell (I think based on solenoid size or something) but I could t tell you nowadays.

I know that back in the day nobody changes their 6V. They just left them in cuz they worked, didn’t die like wiper motors did (constant-on vs intermittent starter) and you didn’t have to grind your bell housing, change flywheel, etc etc.

This current motor actually starts quickly anyway but I always love a nice fast spin anyway. Wink

I’d pull it but I’m lazy. Razz Razz Razz

clean the dirt off the reman. label sr -17x is 12 volt/ sr -11x is 6 volt.
it may be too crusty rusty to make out the markings on the starter/ solenoid?
looks like 11x ?
Steve

If you look straight across from the BOSCH text on the emblem, I swear it says 6V on it.
I agree it looks like 11X too

If it was cleaner I could tell for sure.

Spray it down and jam your camera up in there both with and without the flash, then look at the photos.
I've done a bunch of times on things and I can see detail better in pics than with my eyes.

Awesome! Thank you Steve. I’ll get under there again tonight & clean best I can & see. But I agree it looks like 11x to my eyes. (Or at least “*1x” which I’d assume makes it 11x. And the rate at which it spins I’m leaning 6V already anyway)

One day soon I’ll pull this thing to clean it (it’ll actually probably be the time I swap it for a bigger motor and set it aside in the garage for my wife to complain about for the rest of our lives). “You ever gonna do anything with this motor?” Wink Cool

Your memory is correct, early 6v starters are easy to spot but the later ones which were most often rebuilt look just like the 12v except for stickers and housing stampings.

What do your coil and voltage regulator have to say?
