Turns and stops. Now just the go part.
The steering is a bit sketchy. The steering box moves around a bit more than it probably should. So no steering without moving. Haha.
Only hooked up the front brakes.
Shifting linkage hooked up. Not well attached to the floor though so will need to be gentle on the shifting. I expect to only need first and reverse.
Car show is Saturday so thinking it will be ready.

Would that be the Yarmouth Car Show? I'm in the Valley right now, and hoping to get down your way next week for some golf. _________________ Where would this hobby be if no one shipped parts.

Yes. Main street Yarmouth, Saturday 10 to 3. It is a nice show and always has some very interesting vehicles.
Also the car cruise through Yarmuth Friday evening. We will drive the 64 in the cruise.
Show was canceled the last two years so hard to say the numbers but usually a couple hundred in the cruise and 500-600 in the show. _________________ My 64 Kombi restoration

Got started on the engine assembly tonight. Bit time consuming as haven't done a 36 before so lots of checking internet and manual. Hardest part is done anyway.
Balanced the connecting rods and pistons. Connecting rods were extremely off. but got all the ends within 1g. That old engine must have had quite the vibration.
Took awhile to get end play good with a few shims I could find around the shop. Ended up with exactly .002". Little tight for my liking but will be fine for now.

Spindles welded. Went better than expected.
Started by doing a 1/4" long weld on the scrap. welder set at full power with the line feed a little low. I use pure argon and quite high flow. Put test part in vice and and hammered on it. Finally broke in the weld. I wanted to make sure it wasn't crystallizing the original cast steel.
Then did a quick weld around the scrap with them tight together. Put in the press with the safety guard in place and maxed out the 12 ton press. I figure if the arm sees 12 ton then I have more importing things to worry about than a broken spindle.
Ground away some of the arms to get full weld penetration. Placed sockets in the bushings so they wouldn't get splatter in them.
Came out great and have no concerns at all about the strength. I do have to add a bit more weld on low power where I ate into the sealing surface a bit. At full power the welder likes to liquidize everything very quickly.

Look like you have some big nuts!!
- i would be afraid to drive that welding parts, but looks like i am a little afraid girl...
A rolling Barndoor of course make much more fun to work on it as a emty shell!

Took it for a little drive around the property. All good to go.
Used some .100 aluminum to stiffen the floor for shifter. Lockout plate is not quite right but works good enough.
Ran some 16/3 wire up and taped some switches to brake lever.
Old plywood for a seat. Not the nicest ride. Haha. Maybe a cushion may help.
Battery strapped to floor. My engine stand cables were perfect length.
Old lawnmower gas tank strapped to firewall.
Found an air breather in my stash. Filled it with old oil.
Ready to load on the trailer and strap it down and together. It will be trailered into town and driving into show area.

Looks more road worthy than some of the buses I’ve seen at the Bulli show in Florida… _________________ Joey

I think there is a lot of motivational value to getting a bus running, whatever the condition. Now don't get me wrong, you shouldn't be doing any road trips in that thing, but I think that you know that. But there is a psychological hurdle that is overcome when you can move it around and get some joy in the process. The repairs become faster and more enjoyable. Well done sir. Enjoy the show and make sure to post some pics! |

Show day went great. Around 450 registered. Some very nice stuff. Problem with having an interesting vehicle I you don't get to see the other cars. Seams like you are always chatting.
We got in early but already over 200 cars there. Parked the 64 and unloaded the BD on a back street. Was fun driving it down. little loud driving with two exhaust ports pointing at you. Next year I will try to get an exhaust.
Lots of interest. Many remembered the first year my 64 was there. 6 years to the day.
BD back home and in a barn for a couple months. Need to do some travailing/camping in the 64. Also may have some chores I have put off.
