my 1991 has the 10 pin headlight switch which is NLA. it is having issues, and if cleaning does not resolve, a replacement will be needed.
what options exist to replace the 10 pin switch? hacking the wiring and changing to the 8 pin would bypass something needed in the 10 pin switch i would assume, correct? _________________ 1991 Vanagon GL Camper

You can use the more common earlier headlight switch in your late van but you should add an inline fuse to a wire by the switch.
Coming out of the switch wiring socket is a small Gray/Blue wire from pin 58b.
I would put an ATM fuse holder and 5 amp fuse there in that wire.

The T suffix 10pin switch is readily available, I have 2 on hand. If you revert back to a M suffix you will need the connector housing as the pin configurations are not interchangeable. _________________ Schau in das Buch |

none of the US Vanagon specific vendors have them in stock, several claim they are NLA.
do you have an OEM part? _________________ 1991 Vanagon GL Camper

GoWesty:
"Part #: 251-941-531M
VW Part #: 251941531M
Works With: 1980-1990
Weight: 0.20 lbs
There are two different headlight switches for Vanagon:
Early: # 251-941-531M (1980-1990)
Late: # 251-941-531T (1989-1991)
From the front they look and function identically. However, they are slightly but significantly different on the back. The early style switch has only 8 pins, while the late style switch has 10 pins.
The 10 pin option is no longer available from VW and we are only offering the early style, 8 pin switch. "

gowesty does not have them.
like i said, i looked before i asked, this isn't Facebook.
the option of using the 8 pin i already own is honestly the long term viable option. Dave... put it in the box. _________________ 1991 Vanagon GL Camper

I relooked at vendors and contacted a couple. I found 2 in the US and 6 in Europe that have them in stock. If you do decide to revert back to an 'L" (8 pin) switch I would like to buy your 10 pin connector housing.
On a somewhat related note I am looking for a 11 pin connector housing, they were used with the 323941531J and 251941531S switches.
Thanks _________________ Schau in das Buch |

which US vendors have them? i could not find any that were in stock. as for Europe, the shipping is the price of the item, i understand that, but would rather not have that CO2 footprint added to my already bad Vanagon life.
it was not even remotely clear you were selling. no PM, no price, nothing.
the best solution is to eliminate a hard to find part and go for the one that is easily sourced. _________________ 1991 Vanagon GL Camper

This is an old thread but an unresolved problem. I have a ‘91 with a mostly fried 10-pin headlight switch. The 10-pin switch’s are truly NLA now and seems any old stock is completely dried up.
Can I use an 8-pin switch in place of my 10-pin and if so what modifications do I need to make for it to be fully functional and safe?
