So I have a problem that just surfaced out of nowhere. My wiper fuse (16a) blows when I turn my ignition switch on. I’ve got a 1982 Vanagon with an ej22 conversion. I replaced the fuse and the wipers/washer pump work fine when the key is in the off position, but the fuse immediately blows when I turn the ignition switch into the on position. I was looking at the wiring diagram and am not entirely sure where the culprit could lie. Maybe an issue with the load reduction relay shorting internally when the key is switched on?

Any ideas would be helpful!

Thank you!

Ok, I couldn’t remember if it was supposed to function with the key in the off position or not. Thanks for the clarification, definitely sounds like I’ve got something funky going on.

Ok, it seems like the current draw that is blowing the fuse is coming from my BA6 heater temp control switch to the right of the steering column on the dash (the green rotating switch). It’s never given me issues before and has always worked fine, but when switched on it immediately blows that 16a fuse.

As you likely did, as a first step, inspect for an obvious thing like loose wire at dash. Maybe a positive wire at the gas heater controls at dash fell loose and is shorting to dash metal. Or, there's some wear inside one of those gas heater controls causing a short to ground.

P. 97.24 Bentley appears to show a hard wire (buss) connection on supply side between fuse S8 and S9 S23 for gas heater. i.e. that buss is an unfused positive supply to gas heater fuses. edited: that buss also connects to 30 of load reduction relay. 87 of that relay goes to the S10 16 Amp fuse

Remove gas heater fuses? See what happens?

end edit

I realize this issue just surfaced but to help rule out any engine conversion wiring funkiness.....

Did this Vanagon originally have an air cooled engine?

Neil.

Ok, just an update. The cause of the fuse blowing in that circuit was from the J10 heater safety switch. The plastic housing broke and the switch was flopping around and shorting against the bracket.

Does anyone have any idea where I could possibly find a replacement safety switch?

The switch works but the plastic housing broke?

Just fix the housing and be done with it.

Looks like that Vacuum pipe might be putting stress on the switch.

I agree with Dave, repair the switch housing ......

JB Weld to the rescue !

I just saw your post but as a general rule a blown fuse is always a short to ground before the load. In your case the switch is doing it.
