|

I have a early bay from dec 69 (model year 70)
I’m sitting here in my vacation trying to solve a problem back home. Just before I took on vacation i dident pass the MOT (inspection test), due to rear brake imbalance.
Now I’m investigating all possible causes.
Could someone clarify the different drums for me? I did find a good thread https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=595632
I think maybe the snouts one my drums are to long as the axle nuts have been cut a bit to make the pin go in.
Is it true that there are 3 widths on the rear shoes? _________________ Jakob |

when you say imbalance you mean what? Unbalanced appearance in parts? Wobbles? One works better than the other so unbalanced braking? _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

Yes unbalanced Braking in the rear.
New shoes, lines, drums and brake cylinders.
I did find some fluid in the right side drum. But I couldn’t tell if it came from the cylinder itself or maybe the fluid ran in somehow during bleeding.
But I will look into that of course
I’m a bit confused about what shoes to buy.
When I’m using different websites guides I end up with either 30mm or 45mm wide shoes.
This is what my setup looked like before restauration

usually fluid on the inside is a leak in the cylinder.
You can measure the drums or old shoes to get the width. I have not owned a 1970 so I do not know the nuances of that year. There could be variations on shoes based on some part numbers that Bus-OK.de has on their website, however the fiche shows the following:
REAR SHOES on 1970 which does not have the axle flange like 1971 on:
to chassis #210 2300 000 (1970) the part number on the fiche is 211-609-537C. listed as 45

Brake shoes on an early (68-70) bay bus are 45 mm wide, both front and rear. _________________ '67 bug: seized by the authorities

Thank you guys for your input,
I might have found the culprit, but i will know for sure when Im back home from vacation. Im suspecting the aftermarket empi drum snouts to be a tad longer than they should be. I wouldent be surprised as I recently returned a set of front empi drums for a bus, because the bearing dust caps couldn’t be put on properly. I’ll get back with my findings. _________________ Jakob |
