I’m a bit tweaked by the hoopla over the Olympics and media coverage

I think it’s disrespectful to cover the stress felt by coddled professional athletes , which is what Olympian’s are, to those felt by health care workers, mental health providers , first responders , and just Moms and Dads worrying about how they will care for the kids, the teens, and the parents, and the others.

My sympathy that you too stressed to play in game is present, but reserved.

I’m turning off coverage accordingly

Yeah, this topic is gonna last about as long as the US women’s soccer team’s hopes for gold. Razz

I understand what you're saying. (Don't get me started on calling professional athletes heroes.)

But for participants from other countries, it's not such a gold lined road. For instance, the first Philippine gold medal went to a weight lifter who a short time ago was posting on social media if asking for financial support to get to the Olympics was ok.

https://www.rappler.com/sports/hidilyn-diaz-asks-financial-support-tokyo-olympics-2020-bid

To these true competitors, it's for the love of their sports and their discipline and hard work to achieve these levels of performance really highlight the true spirit of the Olympics.

Still, not watching since the coverage here in the US because of exactly what you posted.

Just because you are a professional athlete (or professional mother or professional garbage man or whatever) does not mean you can't suffer from mental health issues.

By covering professional athletes and their battles with mental health issues it might help others who might be feeling the same way get the treatment they might need before they decide to leave their spouses, or children, or siblings. I don't see why we should discourage covering an athletes mental health issues if they are willing to discuss them publicly..

Mental illness doesn't care if you have a lot of things or not. It doesn't care if you are employed or not. It doesn't care if the world knows you or if you are jus known to your local folks at the diner. It can strike anyone.

And the more we talk about it....versus hiding it like we have done in the past....the more treatment people will accept and the better off we are as a country.

Remember.....people have always had mental health issues. Just because we chose to hide it in the past does not mean it never existed. And if you think ignoring something or burying it makes it not exist then you are sadly mistaken.

I hear you and am on board 100% as a social commentary piece, and that good can come from it.

What the fuck are you even talking about?!?

The athletes that participate in these games, and the professional sports leagues are playing a fucking GAME. Yes, they are the best at what THEY do. But that doesn’t mean that I want to see or hear their opinions on whatever hot button topic that they want to push, and other than showing that they have some serious mental health issues, none of them seem to be pushing a “mental health awareness” agenda.

If you want to compete in the Olympics, AS an AMERICAN, you should not show your contempt for America or the rest it’s citizens. The only way that this shit is gonna stop is when the sanctioning bodies finally start fining, stripping them of whatever trophies/records, and/or firing the assholes that bring whatever sign/signal/symbol of protest to the field or podium.

That sort of selfish signaling ruins it for the rest of the competitors… and for those of us that just want to watch a fucking game.

I can’t even begin to imagine the stress being on a world stage during my early 20s. For the most part they are still kids trying to figure things out. They are not perfect and they make mistakes. Just like the one that tested positive for marijuana, who cares ? I’m happy they represent my country and I’ll support them as best I can.

One difference is its by choice.

Most of us dont have a choice of careers and have to set aside some of our dreams to provide for our families, its hard not to think of being an Olympian with out some sense of entitlement and self-centeredness.

Striving for excellence is great, but not equivalentt to the struggle of the proletariat, or the development of the industrial bourgoise

I dont want to hear about how 'brave' they are, or to be held up as 'heroes'

Thats reserved for a different group with many different flags.

I like watching for those stories of the little folks from some Island country being the best of the world on that day, when they probably had to haul water in a cylinder last week to their village, not practice in a 100M USD sports facility.

And competing on the Vault at age 46 is f-awesome.

Clearly comprehension is something you struggle with.

No where in my comments are the silly things which everyone knows you are referencing. Instead it was focused on acceptance of mental health issues.

Mental illness (no matter to what degree) does not care if you are successful or a failure. It doesn't care if you are rich or poor. It doesn't care if you play a game, save a life, or feed pigeons from a box.

It takes guts to admit you might be suffering from a mental illness because of the stigmatism people like you attach to it.

Simone Biles has spent the majority of her life working to represent this country. I am not calling her a "hero" nor am I putting her on a pedestal for making that personal choice. With a combined total of 30 Olympic and World Championship medals, Biles is the most decorated American gymnast and is regarded by many to be one of the greatest and most dominant gymnasts of all time. That is just a pure fact and she has represented her country with grace and dignity.

But your suggestion that "the only way that this shit is gonna stop is when the sanctioning bodies finally start fining, stripping them of whatever trophies/records, and/or firing the assholes that bring whatever sign/signal/symbol of protest to the field or podium." because she decided her personal mental health was more important than a silly piece of metal around her neck is the exact reason why so many people suffer privately from mental illness and don't seek the help they need.

I certainly hope that you never have a family member or friend who might decide to take their own life because they were too ashamed of the "punishment" you feel they should endure because they are suffering from a mental illness and fear being ostracized for seeking treatment..

USA USA USA!!! At least this year, we don’t have to hear that at the Olympics. I love rooting for my home team but that is obnoxious. The USA are not the only fans with annoying sports traditions. I’m looking at you South Africa Wink Laughing

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

And if any other country wants to pile on the USA for being inconsiderate during the Olympics, that’s any good at soccer(football.) I’m sure we can find other obnoxious fans in your country too. USA USA USA! Laughing

That’s my Olympic rant. Whew, I’m exhausted from all this “Mental Gymnastics” I’m going to call out sick tomorrow and take the day off to recover. I’m sure my boss and Twitter will support me. Wink

Everyone's already forgotten about Larry Nassar? Simone Biles was another one of the victims. And, as far as all of this being "it's just a game"... bullfuckinshit. It's intense hard work with a lot of sacrifice.

I feel badly for Simone, yet what she did was put her teammates first. She already won in my book... classy lady.

Simone Biles has nothing to apologize for, or owe anybody anything.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simone_Biles

Quote:
On July 28, 2021, USA Gymnastics announced that Biles would withdraw from the finals of the individual all-around competition, again citing mental health concerns. Biles had noted that she was experiencing "the twisties", a psychological phenomenon wherein a gymnast loses air awareness while performing twisting elements.

psychological definition: of, affecting, or arising in the mind; related to the mental and emotional state of a person.

"the twisties" A phenomenon wherein a gymnast loses air awareness while performing twisting elements. Sounds a lot like Vertigo, or Spatial Disorientation to me.
I think she made the mature choice when she pulled out individual all-around competition,
being that she had already pulled out of team competition.
Should we have expected her to risk her life, or severe injury by trying to push through this problem.
No, because these competitions are nothing more than games,
but most likely she will not compete in another olympics again because of her decision.
Gymnastics isn't all fun & games
1980. At age 20, former Soviet Union gymnastics champion Elena Mukhina crash-lands while practicing a signature tumbling pass and is paralyzed. She dies decades later at 45.

1988. At age 15, American gymnast Julissa Gomez breaks her neck while performing a difficult vault. Paralyzed, she dies three years later from complications.

1989. A vaulting accident leaves Adriana Duffy, then 17, wheelchairbound. She was competing for Puerto Rico's national team.

1998. At age 17, Chinese gymnast Sang Lan has a vaulting slip-up and is paralyzed.

2007. Chinese gymnast Wang Yan, 15, falls from the uneven bars, breaking her neck.

Alright y’all, I was not aware of the whole Simone Biles saga.

However, the skeptic in me questions the true intent of the athlete-turned-activist.

What the fuck ever, regardless of how much work & sacrifice it is, it’s right there in the title “OLYMPIC GAMES”. It’s a fucking GAME!

The Olympic Games is EXACTLY when you SHOULD be hearing people chanting for their respective countries, not some self-centered prima dona shitting on their own country that allowed them to represent it.

Whether you criticize the country for the war machine by burning the flag, or flying the blue/black racist dog whistle flag, you both celebrate the right to criticize the country and its direction, the most American activity there is.

I hope Simone pulls through and finds her way. It must have been tough to step back from thst stage but losing spatial awareness on a vault can’t end well.

While that freedom is what this country is based on, no one who has been given the honor to represent their country, against other countries, on the world wide stage should have the gall to dishonor that country or their fellow countrymen. If you hate the country, that gave you such an opportunity, so much, get the fuck out.

So wait…. I thought that she pulled out because of her “mental health”.
