VW put them on the front door panels through April 1961.

I found them useful, and wanted them in my 66 velvet green kombi. But the door prop interfered with the pocket as they both occupy a little of the same space. So I modified the repro pocket we make, and voila! That was ten years ago, and I have been offering them since Jan 2012.

Nice looking camper!

Cool to find sequential fabrik #s!

Hi Clara, thanks! Can't wait to get it back and drive. Should be back Wednesday. I'll update with pics on the road Smile

Bus got all new points, cap, rotor, plugs. Fires up strong, pulls good still stalls at every stop. Gonna rebuild the carb, it was barely driven past few years. Hoping that solves it.

Cut off does work, tried cleaning idle jet. No luck.

Any ideas?

Put a new carb on to see if that helped, no luck. Can't find a vacuum leak anywhere. Has fresh gas, new fuel lines. Only things that haven't been swapped so far are coil and condensor. Dizzy is an old brazilian 009 with new points, cap, rotor. Distrubtor drive gear was installed incorrectly in the block, making it a little awkward to time.

It will idle perfect for 20 seconds, revs great and then slowly stumbles and dies. I'm wondering if theres a miniature vacuum leak somewhere that we could find with smoke?

My older VW mechanic said it's the first time he's seen this happen in 40 years of VWs

1600 DP, 34PICT3, 009. Have read a ton of threads on here but most get resolved with something we've tried. Confused

well first off the 34pict3/009 combo is about the worst combo you could choose to run, with the most difficulty tuning.

second, that sounds like weak fuel delivery to me, have you checked the fuel pump output? failed diaphragm? wrong pump rod?

does your carb have a hole in the butterfly?

Hey thanks for the quick reply. Regarding the fuel pump - the fuel filter always has a good amount of gas in it. It fires up everytime within a couple seconds - would a weak fuel pump cause it to stall at idle even with a full fuel filter?

sorry I missed the stalling at idle, I thought this was just when driving.
when starting there is always extra fuel delivered, and when revving the accelerator pump is supplying extra fuel.

so your distributor drive is 180 out? and you're sure the distributor is timed correctly?

adjusting a 34pict3 to run correctly is tough. Is there a hole in the butterfly? sometimes this needs to be soldered closed to provide the proper vacuum signal the fuel circuit.

also check out this page to see if you are adjusting the carb correctly

Why is that Sled, regarding 34pict3/009 combo? And more important what is a better combo?

pic of the engine?
Is the fuel filter clean? Does it get crud in it?

If your bus's camper kit was built in 1965, makes sense the westy tag says 1965. Westfalia used calendar year.
Buses buildt late in 1965 calendar year are 1966 model year.

Destination code should be on your M-code plate, lower left corner.
US is Seattle, WA.
UW is Washington, DC

Got the bus back from my mechanic, running much better. I’ve noticed it doesn’t like to idle when cold. Choke is set correctly but after a couple minutes of driving it’s better. (I’m adding clamps to the fuel filter) mechanic said in the 70s at the VW dealership he was taught not to. I understand but I’ll be doing it for peace of mind…
One thing I did notice is I smelled the dipstick and it smelled like gas. I ordered an old pierburg VW7 I’m going to rebuild and install. I think this old brosol is leaking into the crankcase and might have too much pressure. Going to test.

Got the idiot book and Bentley, reading away. This is my first VW and this site is the most helpful. Thanks and Happy New Year!

@Clara my M plate is actually gone, I ordered the birth certificate. A fella with the bus right near mine in production was Washington DC, I’m assuming this one was as well. My friend found this bus in upstate PA.

Warming up better:
Add the air cleaner pre-heat tube that comes off the bottom of the air cleaner and see if that helps.
It looks like you don't have a hole for the pre-heat in your rear tin but you could cut one if you don't want to find another tin.

I notice you have a 40hp air cleaner "bowl" too. It's a little smaller than a 1500cc one. I don't know if it matters all that much but if you find one for a good price, you might want to swap it out.

Another 1500cc engine for an example of pre-heat and larger bowl:

Hi EverettB,

Thanks for the picture! I noticed that too with my tin. Going to look under my engine and find the preheat tube to connect. Not entirely sure how it connects underneath, I've been trying to find a picture to help. Probably just not knowing what I'm looking for.

On the air cleaner, I bought that then realized it was the smaller one. I'm going to see how it runs after I swap the fuel pump next week.

I should have posted this too

There's a little pipe underneath that bolts to the exhaust and the hose connects to:

If you don't have a pipe, just stick a longer piece of the hose into the "sled" tin to suck up hot air

Hose stuck in there instead

Rebuilt this VW7 last night with the WW kit. Good quality kit. Made a jig on my vice to preload the diaphragm. Thanks to many post on the samba that helped with how to preload. Going to install as soon as I get my longer push rod.

My friend gave me this awesome Towne Volkswagen keychain, fits my bus well as it resides about 20 minutes from center city Philly.

Anyone have a bus originally from Towne?

Over the past couple weeks I’ve been working on the bus.

Had a junky empi carb on it, went to clean the pilot jet. Took it out and the threads stripped out the way out. Couldn’t get the jet back in. In the trash it went, in with a new Volkzbitz 34pict3. Fired it up and still stalled at idle. Tried timing from 28-32 no luck, loud high pitch sound started. Time to replace intake gaskets and boots, they’re at least 8 years old.

While trying to put some old fuel line on my throttle cable because it had worn a groove into the tranny, it snapped. Better to happen in the garage then the road, my dad and I replaced it together. Threw a Bowden tube on it.

Here are a couple pictures, I’m yet to fire it up.
The Samba is amazing, couple months ago I knew nothing about these engines. From reading great step by steps removing the intake at the heads wasn’t so bad. Just gotta keep truckin…

Got the bus running well, next up is the front brakes. Going to replace the wheel cylinders and shoes.

Took my pup out for a nice ride over the weekend, feels great not having to worry about stalling at every stop sign (knock on wood) it turned out to be the idle cut off. It would click but bench testing showed it not to move.

Congratulations on sorting out the idle. These air-cooleds are truly a meditation. Fantastic reward to be cruising around with your pup at the end of a successful day resonating with the heartbeat of that boxer engine...

A rare and different tune
