Gary lee indicates different strengths for the two sides, but no force numbers
The vanagon parts book specifies a different hatch strut for each side of the door.
Left side 251-829-331B lower strength
Right side 251-829-332 higher strength

Good info, thanks, and the direction I'm ultimately going though that is not the question I asked.
My Questions is
"What is the OEM force/strength specification for the rear lift supports?"
So I am starting at stock.
My ultimate destination is to get strengths that lift appropriately - not too much, not too little with the varying weight I have back there. Even Gary Lee cautions against mas strength all the time citing danger of self-opening speed and difficulty to pull down.
BTW, McMaster car for that order is $53 + shipping. Lift support depot is $56 shipping included (you can specify one eyelet and one bass socket) https://www.liftsupportsdepot.com/20-35-lift-suppo...-250e32-w/ _________________ 83.5 Westy with Subaru 2.5, 4 spd manual, center seat, COLD A/C on 134a!, Winter camp heated with an Espar B4 gasoline furnace

I removed a Stabilus from my van that was 300 N (67 lb) but I don't know if it was oem or a replacement. 250 lb struts held up the hatch with two mtn bikes on a Fiamma rack.
EDIT: Ha! The Stabilus shock has a url printed on it so it's clearly a replacement. doh.
Close-op of specs...
133 - 140 lbs sounds like a lot to me. I recall the Stabilus 67 lb strut working just fine. _________________ - Jim

When I bought mine from Bus Depot in late 2018, they were offering 3 versions. I went with the middle version, it's def. got more lift than stock but not anything in a heavy lift like you would need with a bike rack or other rear hatch mounted item.
Hatch stays easy even in Winter when the shocks are really cold, so that's a nice bonus since it's a real pain when lift shocks are chilled and don't want to perform like normal in warmer weather. _________________ '68 Westy- my first VW and vehicle/Bus- long gone.- sold it to a traveling Swiss couple....
