Need new vr6 engine 2002 eurovan

So driving up a mountain pass last week my vr6 had some massive failure and my mechanic is saying a replacement engine is needed...after hearing it "run" and seeing all the metal in the oil filter I believe him.

He's saying he found an engine in a junkyard with 100k miles on it for about 4k. Does this sound right? Is there anywhere to buy a rebuild or crate vr6 engine? Is this 100k engine my best bet?

Total repair cost with replacement engine and transmission service is estimated at 8k.

For reference my van has about 160k on it, with the og transmission.

Any suggestions or insight into how I should proceed? Thanks!

Engine part price is a bit dear but if you source a cheaper one you probably give the money back in labor to swap all the accessories and sort out the warts.

Someone might post “ they have done it in 10 hours” which means the 35-40 hour estimate is about right
