|
|
My foam was still in reasonable condition but I noticed its full of dust and in weak condition to the touch.
After a bit of youtubing I noticed people sealing the foam of gun cases with Plastidip.
I removed my lid, vacuumed and brushed off as much dust as i could, carefully used compressed air to remove more dust then taped it up.
I applied 3 coats, or 1.5 cans and its now clean to touch and looks great.
After first coat
third coat

Is that stuff ok with the hot engine temps, and does it affect sound blocking? I'd love to hear your feedback - if you notice any changes. _________________ -Kevin

i did the PlastiDip coating maybe 5 years ago.
The original foam was deteriorating.
I still looks great!
No problems.
I used the grey color. _________________ 1990 Westy Full Camper |

i used 3 CANS to coat mine, it came out great and reduced the engine noise a significant amount. the foam drinks up the spray and it really gets dense.
zero issues with the heat on the product, it's good to over 200*F. _________________ 1991 Vanagon GL Camper

Sounds relatively simple to do (IE within my skill set). _________________ -Kevin

Consider starting with a product like Grez Off first:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=9155928&highlight=plastidip+foam#9155928
That'll get all the old grunchy oil fumes etc out of the foam. Worked for me.
If you find that an area is getting worn in any part of the hatch foam a year or two out, simply touch it up. Done.
Holds up to the heat and road grime thrown its way. _________________ "Fritz", a temperamental and unforgiving 1989 Westy that proudly bears his German flags and status as a member of the exclusive GoWesty Belly Flop Club.
