I've got a 1967 bug with the original 1500 engine. It's got Solex German 30-PICT 1, and single vacuum advance distributer. To my knowledge the only work that's been done on it other than normal tune ups etc, was in the early 80s some of the valve seats were changed out when the switch to unleaded gas happened.

It's due for a rebuild, it's leaking oil from multiple places and getting a little tired. I'd like to keep it as stock as possible.

I haven't had much luck finding parts to do a 1500 rebuild. It seems most folks switch over to 1600. Can you do that and still keep the rest of things the same? Single port heads, SVA distributer and 30-PICT 1?

Any input is appreciated.

… back in the '80s my 1964 bus 1500 needed rebuilding - George the magnificent in NJ was the guy - Even, back then, 1500 heads were tough to find and he went 1600 - the natural choice - a 1600 jug and piston set too - he did a fabulous job - still running that engine in my 1960 single cab - YES 1600 is the way to go in your '67 type one - z

Just to clarify, yes you can put the 1600 piston and jugs on without changing anything else. It'll work, I did the same on my 67

Yes, the swap is direct. Nothing else needs to change. That's probably why nobody even makes 1500 pistons and cylinders. The direct swap made them obsolete.

To answer from the other side of the question - yes, if you wish to keep it stock, you can still find 1500cc parts. I have seen piston cylinder sets come up in the classifieds here, or you can post a wanted ad. www.bugcity.com also has parts (do your research on quality manufacturers). Ebay periodically has parts, as well - just make sure you are looking for 83mm, not necessarily "1500" (as that was also the name of a car which tended to have domed pistons, which can be a little rough on your block).

YES.

Even if you live in a hot climate, your non-vented 1967 engine lid should be OK with 1600cc single port engine; if not, use lid standoffs or tennis ball trick.

YES, as stated, the 1600 cylinders are a direct replacement with no downside or modifications needed. If the heads can be rebuilt then do it.

Two winters ago I rebuilt the top end of the H motor 1500 in my 67 Bug. There was no need to go into the case, so I got a set of 1600 P&Cs, had my single port heads rebuilt, and put everything back together with fresh seals and gaskets all around after cleaning and painting the tins and various parts. I also did a clutch/pressure plate and TO bearing, replaced the 2 rear transmission mounts and replaced the firewall tar boards while the engine was out of the car. Once everything went back in, my Solex 30/31 PICT adjusted perfectly and the car runs great.

As stated, be sure all your tin is installed correctly and rubber engine compartment seals are in good shape (or new) and you should be good to go.

"just make sure you are looking for 83mm"
If you do go back to 1500, make sure you don't get 83mm 40hp big bore, same bore as "1500" but different.
