Brown wire
Brown/white
Yellow/red

Those three come out of the harness under the rear seat. I looked at the diagram, and it shows they go to the testing port. Anyone really know what their actual purpose is? Just curious.....

I think the brown wire went to the negative battery terminal and then the brown/white wire to the connection point for the negative battery cable to the chassis - perhaps to make sure that there was no voltage loss and the chassis was getting a good ground?

The yellow and red wire is a little more perplexing. It appears to connect to a point on the factory battery that would be at the 6 volt point between the third and fourth cells (mid-point of the battery). That could be used to help in testing the battery to make sure that the cells on both sides gave a balanced voltage and identify a bad cell on one side of the battery. I doubt any aftermarket batteries had this connection point - they certainly don't now.

Red/Yellow wire is part of the defunct VW Diagnostic System. Goes from a probe that checked battery electrolyte levels on VW proprietary batteries to the Diagnostic plug pin 7
