The big 4 van parts sellers (GoWesty, Bus Depot, etc) are all back-ordered on the hatch latch extender for Vanagons. Mine seems to have taken a walk during the past year-and-a-half of Pandemania, so I need a replacement. If anyone knows of a source that I’ve missed please let me know.

And this is an option

Smaller form factor
Secure - can't be unscrewed
Less $

5/16 IIRC....1/4 will slip over the body side latch

Eventually I'm thinking a piece of heat shrink tubing to cover the threas

I can make one for you but shipping will be more than the part....check out your local True Value/Ace

I still have my original Brandrup Air-Safe I got 20 years ago from https://www.eurocampers.com

Unfortunately it looks like they only make them for T4+ now
https://www.brandrup.de/en/brandrup-products/volkswagen-accessories/vw-vehicle-interior/vw-air-safe/

This place looks to have a version in stock if you don't want to go the homemade route

the PDXWesty turnbuckle above is what I have used for a few of mine now. To secure it, a few good whacks with a hammer on the ends (peen hammer above and below, to get into the ditch) and then the mangled threads won't allow the full removal of that device by unscrewing it. It is really good to have the ability to change the gap for a variety of temps. Epoxy would also get the job done.

Turnbuckle's the way to go. Set your length and solder the threads in place.

Cake.

Did you do the bends 'cold', or did you use a torch to soften the spots where you did the 90 degree bends?

It depends upon the metal the bolt is made of.

Most of the time we shun Home Depots crap offshore hardware but here?
A nice soft low grade malleable bolt is exactly what you want!

A high quality High Strength bolt won't bend so easily without stress cracks.

Or...... use heat.
Red Hot metal will bend in almost any way you desire it to go.
