So I did a lot of research and was convinced that the reverse switch was wired incorrectly.
Strangely coil only didnt appear to have a reverse wire plugged in, got under car and at the trans there is no wiring installed at the reverse switch. So no mis-wiring on the reverse lights because no reverse light wiring.
Thoughts on what else it could be?
It is a 68 dual 34 with a cam, it seems to do this when hot or cold. To back up, I slowly release clutch, and get it rolling before it dies. |

Are you sure you're checking the right switch? Most of the reverse switches are located on the nose cone section of the trans. I only mention this, as some cars (depending on export location) had a 4th gear switch on the right side of the trans to let the ECU know that it could slightly reduce the timing (California models) Otherwise I'd look to see if the wire from the coil isn't touching/plugged into a ground. It's also possible that you're not letting it warm up enough. I hope this helps. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Reverse lights need to be switched to opposite current flow. _________________ 64 No'back Speedster "Pearl"

Okay, is it stalling when you shift into reverse or only when you are lifting the clutch up? As in, if you shift into reverse and keep your clutch foot down will it happily idle?
If it stalls as soon as you shift I would be looking at the reverse circuit grounding itself somewhere after the switch. If it stalls only after you let the clutch up that is a whole other problem. |

Yes it idles happily when in reverse with clutch pedal down. When trying to actually put in gear I have to really goose the rpms or let it slip to reverse with out stalling. Idle speed set way to low? (I havent checked the idle speed yet) |

I will double check this. I honestly cant remember where I saw the un-terminated tabs on the trans. First time up close and personal with it. I didnt see any other wires coming from the trans so I assumed those were the only sensor/switch on it. |

What is your idle speed? It might be too low. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

You have two unrelated problems, but FYI it's impossible to wire the reverse light switch incorrectly - it doesn't matter which wire gets connected to which terminal on the switch.
What does matter is which terminal on the coil you connect the power supply wire (for the reverse lights) to. That one has to be on terminal 15. If you hook it to terminal 1, the engine will die instantly when you shift into reverse.
As for your stalling problem, the car does not have any way of knowing it's in reverse or a forward gear. Reverse is a lower gear than first though, so my only thought is some sort of carb or distributor advance problem. _________________ 1965 Volkswagen 1500 Variant S

I recently had to replace the reverse switch in my 69 Beetle because it was momentarily shorting to ground when reverse was engaged...it blew the fuse. Maybe your car doesn't have an inline fuse?
But if you have no wires connected to the switch, I don't see how it could be the switch, unless you mean only one wire is connected.
Another thought...are the trans mounts bad enough the engine is rocking, and pulling on the throttle cable? |

Thanks for the replies, as some have stated it is looking like I have bigger problems. The car starts idle at about ~625 and after 10 minutes rises to ~1200. This was a cool night, on hot days it doesnt seem to ever settle.
Using a laser thermometer one side of the exhaust is 180-210 and the other is 400+. So much for the seller claiming an engine tune up.
The fun begins. |

Pull the plugs and let's see what they tell us. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.
