I just noticed now that I'm on a desktop, what's the "WD" stamped on the engine, under the distributor boss? _________________ Robert in Memphis

It’s a used AS41 case. So, likely a stamp of someone who built a motor with the case in the past. _________________ __________

Regarding the W whatever stamping on the case,

^Thanks guys! The car is a blast! I have always been such a Bus guy, I never knew how much I’d like a Beetle. I’ve e been on vacation all week and I’ve been picking my son up from school and taking him to XC and baseball practice in the car. The kids say it’s the coolest car, but I know you guys have all heard that. I’m definitely noticing a difference with the 15/50 synthetic oil, it was a good change. Just another thing I learned from The Samba.
I have a 5 mile 1000’ hill to climb to get home from town. The speed limit is 65 and both of my ACVWs have no problem keeping up with traffic. When I get home in the summer, I always pop the deck lid to let the heat escape. Do I need to, no. Just a habit I got into. Got this pic yesterday.

Earlier in the week I was out with the bug and noticed a puddle under the car. 😩 I thought it was gas from the Tundermingo carbs, but when I crawled under the car it was obvious it was oil. Turns out one of the AN fittings on my external oil filter set up started to leak. I got it home, cleaned up the mess and what a mess it was. Today I took the hose off and pulled the fitting apart. The fitting was fine but there were 2 cracks in the hose. I had extra hose, but didn’t feel comfortable using the fittings again. So I ordered 2 new ones from Summit and they will be here at the end of the week. I think I’m gonna order a finned alternator pulley for the car as well.
My son, dawg and I are heading to the ABC Jamboree in Flagstaff on Wednesday in our bus. So I won’t get the car back together for a couple of weekends. Stoked on the event and I’ve been getting stuff ready for a few days now.
Apart
Got the trailer packed and hooked up.

New oil line was built and installed. The line that was leaking had 2 cracks where the line goes into the AN fitting. New line was made a little bit longer, as it was thought that maybe there was a pulling or tugging happening when the motor was vibrating. About to drive it for the first time in 3 weeks. Stoked! _________________ __________

The car has been kicking my ass. The new oil line I installed leaked immediately. Built a new line and installed that and there was still oil on the tins after a drive. Cleaned all the tins, removed some tin screws and got in the crevices. After the deep clean there was no more oil, I think it was running out from the crevices. So the new line isn’t leaking, happy about that.
Went to start it today and it was locked up. I was able to rotate it backwards to unlock it and got is started. I didn’t notice an elevated oil level, I didn’t notice a gas smell and the car ran excellent. I decided to change the oil and once I got it into the oil pan I noticed the gas smell. So new filter and oil. This engine takes a solid 5 quarts.
I need to check the float levels, but it started raining and my outside activities are done for the day.
New oil line. It doesn’t match, but it’s not leaking.
One of engine

Made a set of defrost extenders. $2.50 in hardware and 2 Tupperware lids from the cabinet (I’ll play dumb when wifey asks where the missing lids are). For the price of these things these are good enough for who they are for.

Final product

Hey! Those are not bad. In fact they are pretty awesome. Anyone who has got stuck in the rain at night knows how much the heated defrosters are needed. Especially if someone thinks it funny to tailgate you at this instance. Badass beetle BTW. |
